BAO CHUNLAI Of innocence and sophistication
Source: www.badzine.info
Bao Chunlai, has recently won the Korea Open and clinched an unexpected silver medal at the World Championships in Madrid. But who is he really ? Our Badzine Correspondents investigated in China.
His surname in Chinese is also the character used to represent abalone, titled his personal weblog The Invincible Baby Abalone and refers to himself as the invincible Baby Abalone. His most outstanding characteristic innocence - is evident from this child-like internet pseudonym.
By Flora Liang and Jamie Kong
Role model to every child
Other than a couple of times during those nail-biting moments in a fiery battle on court, you will hardly ever see Bao Chunlai lose his temper. To his coach Zhong Bo, he is a protg whom he never has to worry about, always carrying out his assigned training tasks to perfection. To his compatriots, he is the renowned Mr. Nice who is a good friend even to the hotheaded Lin Dan. To his fans, he is the ever-obliging and appreciative idol. He specially posed for a set of professionally-taken pictures to boost the popularity of his official website set up by a group of his fans, where he takes time to interact with his avid supporters.
Ironically, this mild-tempered and well-mannered young man actually feels that he is too goody-two-shoes. In his own words, he was a very wild child, and his mother resorted to sending him for calligraphy classes in an attempt to tame him. This harsh decision was, in fact, a blessing in disguise which came to nurture a young and talented calligrapher. Way before wielding his racket to international fame, Bao Chunlai had already won gold medal honours in an international childrens calligraphy competition by wielding his brush.
I never expected to end up at the other extreme though. Im too obliging. I lack character. And thats not good. Bao Chunlai sometimes wishes that he could be pull off some charismatic acts like his good friend Lin Dan, but the reserved personality cultivated from young prevents him from doing so. Since there was no way he could cross this psychological barrier no matter how envious he may be of Lin Dans passionate and uninhibited celebratory behaviour on court, he declared indignantly, I will never appear half-naked on court!
Growing up Of anime and comics
Bao Chunlai is senior to Lin Dan by a few months although they were born in the same year. While their junior Chen Jin proclaims to be mature using his taste in music as evidence, Bao Chunlai is still blissfully immersed in his world of animation and comics.
Ever since the national team shifted to their new dormitory, the players were blessed with broadband internet access, and that certainly made Bao Chunlai the happiest boy on earth. Whenever he has time off, its battle time with his fellow cyber games fanatic Fu Haifeng.
Bao Chunlais other craze is animation, particularly those about defeating monsters, like Ultraman. When engrossed, he might even grab the person next to him and shout, Look at Ultraman! I shall eliminate my opponent tomorrow in the same manner! Makes one wonder what runs through his buddys mind upon seeing such a scene, since Lin Dan has apparently grown out of watching animation long ago.
Baffling romantic episode
There was a time when Lin Dan could take Bao Chunlais childishness no longer, and suggested him to get into a relationship proper. Falling madly in love, and falling out of it thereafter, Lin Dan believes, should toughen him up a little.
The angelic young man did eventually experience an earth-shattering romance. News got around that he and Chinese national swimmer Luo Xuejuan were an item, but the short-lived relationship ended before both could fathom what exactly happened. The only difference was that Bao Chunlai no longer blushed at the very mention of the girls name. Contrary to what Lin Dan had predicted, Bao Chunlai did not appear to have matured very much from this episode. Perhaps he will have to continue his search for the one for now.
