All I said was, suppose LD was facing an opponent who can "up the pace" all the time (an example is himself in 2004), he may be in trouble. In fact, my opinion is that, the reason why PG did better against LD than JOJ or Persson, is that PG has the ability to "up the pace" once in a while.

There are many ways to skin a cat (SPCA approval not withstanding). Just in case, RS did not beat LD in OG2004. LD's impatience got the better of him. LD2009 will annihilate LD2004 by just being multi-dimensional and more patient.

it's quality, not quantity grasshopper333. We only need 1 player that is better than LD and we won't be debating this issue. Having 10000 TH, 10000 lcw, 10000 PG, 10000 PSH, 10000 CJ, 10000000000000 Simon S, 100000000000 NTM, 10000000000000000000000 JOJ, etc would still not change the outcome for LD.

I am not arguing that LD is not the current best player. I even agree that he can still be the best player should he be "transported" to any era. My whole point is, the "invincibility" LD fans claim is mostly due to the lack of strong opponents. As the H2H of LD vs LCW clearly shows no change starting 2008.

Btw, if there are 10000 LCW, then LD needs to fight a LCW in every round, and suppose other LCWs give walkover to each other, LD will be in deep deep trouble.

That's exactly what I was trying to say. The top players of today, except perhaps LCW, seem to just be the same old players of a few years ago... just getting a bit on the old side now... There's no question Lin Dan has developed as a player. But I don't think it's *just* that which contributes to his dominance since the Olympics. If the level of competition were at the standard of a few years ago, I think Lin Dan would still be the best for sure, but may not be able to win practically every tournament he enters...

If he only has to play one player capable of even coming close to beating him in any given tournament, he's not going to have too much trouble is he? If he meets two or three who can give him trouble, then he can't be quite as confident. The chances of being knocked out get higher and higher. The more players, the more chances. So yes, I think quantity has a lot to do with competition, and the lack of it gives Lin Dan this "unbeatable" aura. He's great, but not unbeatable.

Anyway, I just want to see an overall stronger Mens Singles field. I hope some of the younger players can show a bit more potential.

Sir, jog your memory a bit. RS is the one who stopped LD in OG2004.

I brought up RS because it is very unlikely for LD to repeat the fumble. That's why I believe LD(now) is much better than LD2004.

Err.. you mean he was a force prior to 2005? I think RS is a good player but not quite at the level to be considered a force. There are the core favourites like LD, LCW, TH, and PG, then there are the inner rung of BP, CJ, BCL, SS, SDK, and PSH. I simply do not see RS in there.
