China's shuttlers to join Indonesia Open

Eva C. Komandjaja, The Jakarta Post/Jakarta

China has confirmed its participation in the US$170,000 Indonesia Open badminton championship next month, while defending champion Taufik Hidayat expects a tough challenge from opponents.

The five-star tournament will be staged at the Bung Karno Tennis Indoor Stadium from Dec. 15 to Dec. 19.

China is the only foreign team to have registered but organizing committee chairman Sulistyanto said that he was optimistic badminton giant countries such as South Korea, Malaysia, Japan and Denmark would follow soon.

"China has confirmed that it will send its top players including world number one Lin Dan," Sulistyanto, an official of the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) in charge of foreign affairs, said.

China dominated last year's tournament in Batam by winning three of five titles -- women's singles, women's doubles and men's doubles.

Indonesia and South Korea took one each, the men's singles and mixed doubles, respectively.

Indonesian champion Taufik Hidayat, whose 2003 championship was sealed in style by defeating a number of China's top players en route to his title, said that it would be a mounting task to accomplish when he goes on court to defend his title.

"It's more difficult to retain a title than wresting it from a champion, especially in a tournament before home supporters who have high expectations. But I will try to do my best," said Taufik, whose badminton career peaked when he won an Olympic gold in September.

The Indonesia Open, which had been rescheduled from June to allow more time for the Thomas Cup arrangement in May, will be the season-closing tournament after China Open and Singapore Open, late November.

Icuk Sugiarto, PBSI's chief in charge of development affairs, said that all Indonesian shuttlers at the training center would play in the event.

"This is a good opportunity for our shuttlers to participate in an international event at home. The shuttlers in good condition will take part in this tournament," Icuk said.

However, men's doubles specialist Halim Haryanto will not be among the local squad after he resigned from the training center on Wednesday.

PBSI's secretary-general Mangombar Ferdinand Siregar confirmed Halim's departure, saying that Halim had decided to quit in order to join his wife, Jeanny Nathalia, in the United States.

Apart from Siregar's explanation, Halim's departure has most likely stemmed from the fact that he and his partner Candra Wijaya failed to qualify for the Olympics.

Men's doubles coach Christian Hadinata said that Halim had already planned to resign since June, when he found out that he had to bury his Olympic dream.

"He had to postpone his resignation plan until now, due to a change in PBSI leadership, including coaching staff. The fact that his wife is studying in the U.S. may have left him with no options but to follow her," Christian said. After Candra reunited with his former partner Sigit Budiarto last month, Halim had to settle with his former partner Tri Kusharjanto but the partnership did not prove successful.

Damn. Why Lin Dan and Xia Xuanze don't want to compete in the Singapore Open ? Anyway I hope Taufik can win his third Indonesia Open title.

Halim is going to US ? I think he's going to partner Tony Gunawan. Vita Marissa had also went to US. Maybe either Tony or Halim would want to partner her to play mixed doubles.

    Hi Silvia

It should be Bung Karno Tennis Indoor Stadium. If it's written only Indoor Stadium then I guess my editor accidentally erased the word "Tennis" on it.
Its located in Senayan, near the gravel tennis courts...it's different from Istora where the Thomas/Uber Cup was held.

If you wanna go there, just enter the Bung Karno Sports Complex and ask around, you should be able to find it...it's not that difficult :D

I can't figure out why they held such a big 5-star international badminton competition in the tennis indoor court??? Gees...I hope they don't do that because they thought the number of spectators would not be tremendous. I believe it will, recalling that this is a 5-star tournament and it is held in Indonesia, a country where supposedly many fans would flood the venue.

OOT, I never know that so many Indonesians are so active in this forum recently. Last year I could count the very-few number of Indonesians who were active. I'm very happy to see all of you here :) Probably we can meet somewhere in Jkt or play together?

    Cheers,
    Dania :)

Yes...i don't like tennis indoor stadium either. it's dark and cold LOL while istora is big and bright....but the organizing committee said that istora is fully booked for the date (since PBSI was pretty late in setting up the date for indonesia open) so they had to chose tennis indoor.

it was not so bad actually since the 2003 asian championship was held there but it's true about the capacity not big enough to accomodate all badminton enthusiasts..but good thing about tennis indoor is that the court/field is big enough for six badminton courts (unlike istora which can only take four courts) so the qualifying/preliminary round should be faster with six courts playing :D

so...you guys are going there??? hope we can meet :D

Indonesian women shuttlers say smaller is better Eva C. Komandjaja, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Women's badminton coach Hendrawan wants his charges to shape up, so he is not allowing the women to compete in any major tournaments for the rest of this year while they focus on their physical conditioning.

"They need to get in shape physically, especially their legs and thighs, in order to be better badminton players," he told The Jakarta Post over the weekend.

Four women's singles shuttlers -- Silvi Antarini, Maria Kristin, Adrianti Firdasari and Francisca Ratnasari -- will only be able to compete in smaller tournaments for the remainder of the year, including the Malaysia Satellite tournament and the two-star Chinese Taipei Open later this month.

"We want to send them to these small tournaments. If they can win there, it will give them the feeling of victory," Hendrawan said.

"It is important to boost their confidence after they have exited recent major tournaments in the first round or in the qualification stage.

"Having self-confidence is a determining factor in whether a shuttler wins or not, in addition to his or her technical skills," he said.

Hendrawan is optimistic his athletes can win the Malaysia Satellite tournament and reach the semifinals at least in the Chinese Taipei Open.

However, he is making one exception for the shuttlers, allowing them to compete in the five-star Indonesia Open next month in Jakarta.

"We hope their physical conditioning will be improved by December so they can get a good result in the Indonesia Open," he said. For next year, Hendrawan is targeting medals in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games to be held in Manila. "We do not want to set an unreachable target like winning the world championship. We are just setting a modest target, which is winning any type of medal in the Games," he said. "Then in 2008, we are aiming to bring home the Uber Cup (women's team world championship)."

    just a brief information

13 countries sign up for Indonesia Open

JAKARTA: Aside from host Indonesia, 12 other countries have confirmed their participation in the US$170,000 Indonesia Open badminton tournament, to be held from Dec. 15 to Dec. 19 at the Gelora Bung Karno Tennis Indoor Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta.

Badminton powerhouse China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore are among the participating Asian countries, while Denmark, France, Wales, England and Russia will be coming from the European front.

Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) secretary-general Mangombar Ferdinand Siregar said he had not yet received the exact number of shuttlers playing in the five-star tournament, as the closing date for registration was still two weeks away. Indonesia will send 42 shuttlers from its national training center to the tourney. -- JP
