badminton~ pain in the back??

    well i started playing badminton this year. i play for my high school and me and many of my friends have discovered that it has given us sharp pains in our lower back. the pains in my back were so bad during on tornament i couldnt move and had to frofeit my matches for the day.. on of my friends had to retire from the game all together because the pains get soo bad! well the point is i was just wondering our thes mornal pains..is it true that badminton is a pain in the back?? hope to hear what you all have to say

    i have never heard of such a thing i and i think that you are experiencin pains not related to badminton!

    Hmm, never had back problem playing badminton. Do you do adequate warm-up prior to playing? Perhaps you need to move back further to hit the shuttle, ie, perhaps you bend too much? Do you do frequent exercise to strengthen your back? These are a few scenarios that come to mind and I am sure there are others.

    yeah i do proper warm up and i watchmy bending i am just going to watch what i do...thanks for the reply

    I think u guys dont do stretching excersises after your games. During your Gym sessions u should concentrate a lot on your back too.

    I think this is a phenomenan experienced by few intermediary players.

    These issues can be easily addressed by Your coach.

    I would think that this could be a problem with entry level players. Their form can be off and may be excessive arching of the back to reach for clears or improper form during smashing.
    For beginners, there's a lot of reaching, bending, and contorting just to reach for a bird. They are just not used to the motions.

    I've been playing for years and at sometimes I still have to perform circus acts to make my shot.

    Stretching and increasing flexibility helps a lot.

    I disagree with u, cld be an injury, cld be psychological. And it isn't funny when it starts to hurt:p:p.

    As i said in a earlier post ''' trunk muscles for badminton '', i also have slight back pains. I may be young, but i'm not a entry player as i'm playin at a quite high level ( my county under 17 and hopefully county 3rd team next season ). I'm in good shape, i train my back well in balance with my stomach and chest.
    I think that if anything that beginner players arch the back less and put less stress on there backs then more advanced players who twist there bodies more in order to play a more attacking shot ( i.e. a around the head smash rather than a back hand clear ).

    I do agree that the shots that entry players try put more stress on the back while learning the new skills as it is a new stimuli on the muscles so they aren't use to it, but once the body adapts to these new stimuli then the pain should start to fade, unless the technique that is being used is wrong.
    But if you are being taught that shot ( i.e. around the head shot ) which is one of the more advanced shots then the coach should know what to look for, and so correct any faults that he/she has spotted.
    After all it's not practice that names perfect, it's perfect practice that makes perfect.

    I also agree that it is important to have flexiblty in the whole of the of the core area ( i.e. abdominals, obliques, spinal errectors ) but it is also important to have strngth in these areas also, the abdominals must be strong as they support the spine by increasing the internal pressure on it ( i.e. it does the same job as a weight belt for other words ).

    The increased intra-abdominal presure helps to releive the load of the spinal discs, strong lower back muscles are needed to prevent extra stess on the lower back and provide extra support to it. - taken from the book '' stronger ab's and back '' by Dean Brittenham and Greg Brittenham

    i do proper streching after games becuz i have to run home...actually run and have to strech it out and have good posture for my running...my coach also just started so he knows very little and my doctor is kind dumb so i am going to a specialist and i will let you all know what was wrong....

    these are pains related to badminton because i have done sports all my life and never had a problem until i started this sport..

    i am involved in swimming, waterpolo. softball, soccer, and golf... which i have played all these for years and never hada problem so i think that i just am forgetting a proper and necessary strech that i am going to try to find...

    I play for my county ( which i supose is the english version of states in America ). But the standard is quite high. I''v played people that have played for there country ( 1 of them plays for Wales ) the other for england U-14 who is now focusing more on his international carrer.
    There skill level is in a world of it's own

    Linsey, a lot of people have given unhelpful replies here, I feel.

    When I resume badminton after a break I often get terrible pain in my lower back, right near the base of the spine. It feels like a pinched nerve, but I believe it is due to some very small muscles around there which tend not to respond to normal back training.

    What causes it? I think it is bending over to pick up the shuttle in my case. As soon as I stopped bending over and started bending the knees instead, the pain was lessened.

    How to fix it? Johno gave good advice here. Remember that lower back muscles and abdominals have a constant relationship. Train your lower back using hyperextensions--no weight, and start with only one set. If you overtrain your lower back it will kill you in the morning. As your strength increases, try slow light deadlifts, with knees slightly bent.

    And whenever you train lower back, also train abdominals using crunches and twist crunches for the obliques.

    And remember to bend the knees and squat down when you pick up the shuttle to alleviate the pain. When your back pain recovers you can probably stop doing this. Also, very experienced players often scoop up the shuttle with their rackets which minimises bending.

    Clive,

    I spk to my friend who plays for the state and he si a guy who has trained with gopichand and others.

    He told me it could be for various reasons as small as Changing t-shirts to the way the player plays.(meaning th estroke production and How his position is when he hits the shuttle.)

    I think he says it is a standard thing coaches look out for when plp do not attach importance to smalll things like changing t-shirt or not excersising your back.
