wrist pain anybody?

Discussion in 'Techniques / Training' started by frustrated guy, Jul 22, 2001.

  1. i'm thirty something, getting too old for this sport. just this year i'm experiencing wrist pain in every session. at the start of warm up, i can only clear halve court with my forehand to avoid wrist pain, if i try a full court clear, the pain is unbearable (i'm a wimp). it takes me about 5 minute warm up before the pain goes away, so it not too bad. do you guys/gals experienceing wrist pain in the beginning of warmup? if you do, in general, what age group are you? thxs

  2. i have arm pain if i start to lob full court without stretching and stroking half court pushes and lobs for a while.

  3. Re: no one replying to this post!

no reply, this subject must have been disgussed before. thxs for replying Pebulutangkis, i guess the best solution for our problem is have a good slow warm up, i was hoping for a miracle solution, oh well.

30-something isn't all that old. wish i could still say that i was 30+.

you could be seeing an early warning sign for tendonistis, which is an over-use injury. it could come from improper technique. do you feel tightness in your forearm muscle? do you keep your arm & grip very loose & relaxed for the most part while playing?

Yes, I had experienced the wrist pain before in warm up: When hitting the shuttle I could feel the pang and shuttle went half court. After few minutes of warm-up, the unbearable pain went away (however, I can still feel the pain, but bearable). This happened because I didn't do proper warm-up. I was rushing for the one-empty court to play. (I know, I know, I should've known better! :) )

After that initial pain, I would do my wrist-exercise before playing and after a week, the pain "disappear".

    Re: Wrist band anybody???

To all you guys out there with wrist pain.

There could be various reasons for wrist pain. It could range from Poor technique to head heavy rackets.

I am very sure that u guys will agree to the fact that age does catch up. the only way this can be delayed is Spending more time on warm up excersises.

I think u guys should start doing the thing in which u rotate your wrist alternatively while pulling a weight which hangs on to a bar or something like that.

The above should be done with your Gym excersises. During your warm up u should free your wrists as much as possible.

We should realise that as we grow older our movement goes down a bit. So we try to compansate by using our wrist and arm power which is still very good.

So the wrist takes a banging as you are playing a very difficult stroke from an uncanny position.

I think if dont find time for Fitness training then the best option that u guys have is to change your racket to a 3U or a even balanced racket like Carlton AS 1or the AB 2000.

Throw your 2U rackets which are head heavy away.

I am very sure u will find a remarkable difference!

    I hope this helps!

By the way i am 23.

    Exercises

As yogesh suggests, wrist/forearm exercise could help. Don't over do it, tho'. If it is early sign of tendonitis, an over-use injury, then too much exercise of forearm muscles & the wrist tendons could exacerbate the problem. Too much tricep work could also aggravate the prob.

Do not do the forearm exercises right before badminton; it could tighten you up too much.

When warming up for badm, go slow & stay relaxed. Be sure to stretch the wrist and forearm AFTER you've warmed up for a bit.

Yogesh may also have something with the racket balance/weight.

    stay loose,
    gregr

    Carpal tunnel?

I'm wondering if you might be suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome from the piano practice. Piano keyboards and most computer keyboards tend to put stress on the wrists. This is due, in large part, to the pronated position for extended periods of time in which it puts your forearms & wrists.

Ask you piano teacher for advice on this. Do you pivot your wrist from side to side as you play?

  10. Re: a reply

    thanks for the respond gregr.

my physical part of badminton is pretty relax but my mental part is another matter. my wrist pain is not that bad during matches, actually it pain free, i only feel the pain in the first couple of dozen hits. once the wrist is warm up, the pain disapear. the reason i ask about wrist pain because i never has this problem until the beginning of this year, so i figured is part of aging process. maybe i just rotate my wrist, warm it up a little bit as jayes suggested before picking up the racket.

  11. Re: Wrist band anybody???

thanks for the excellent suggestion yogesh.

i have never strech or warm up my join before i play because i didn't feel the need. but now, i definitely will do the strech and warmup of my joints before pickuping the racket.

do you stretch the wrist and forearm even if you feel you already have a adequate warm up? what about after a intensive match, is there a cool down process? i noticed the regular elder players usually can not play after they cool down, and they usually call it a day, i hope this doesn't happen to me until a long, long time.

  14. Re: just a forum name???

i'm not frustrated it is just my aliase forum name. i use it because it stand out, that's all. there is some occassion i get frustrated but a good intensive single match will cure it.

    Re: just a forum name???

About your wrist pain I can't comment on it cause I'm not an specialist in that area. I can tell you that long time ago I had similar problem which also would go away after warming up. But later in became more unbearable - I was yound and did not want to stop playing, until I really had to go to a doctor. I had injured one of my wrist's 'cartilage'?? so spent some time recovering.
I had an accident a few weeks ago and injured my wrist. I visited a chiropractor and he applied an ultrasound on it. Immedially I felt numbness in my affected area. The doctor told me that was a sign of injury and I had to undergo some treatment. According to the doctor some old injuries may also cause discomfort which tends to deteriorate as we grow older. My suggestion would be to consult a specialist to check if your wrist is ok before anything else.

    Stretching

you should stretch after 2 or 3 minutes of warmup. never stretch cold muscles and joints. the older you get the more important strectching becomes.

if you've playd or worked out for while and plan to take an extended break, then stretch again (before taking that break). i find that if i don't do this that some joints (or old injuries) will be very sore when i resume play.

probably the most important strectching is the post-exercise stretching (when you are done for the day). above all else, don't neglect this one.

thanks again gregr. you are wise, i definitely take your good advice and put into use.

  18. allergic to hospital.

i can't stand hospital, the smell, the sense, eerie feeling i get when i'm in a hospital. i don't even have a family doctor, the last time i saw a doctor is about 16 years ago when someone hit my sister car at a cross section and i was sitting at the back seat. if is not a fatal injury, i think the real doctor is 'time' and 'rest'. time heals all wound. i think some general family doctor is a joke, only the specialist is any good. one time my 6 year old nephew suffers tremendous chest pain, and the stupid family doctor give him few tynenol and send him home. thank goodness my dad have the six sense, knowing something is not right, drove him to see another doctor in another town 3am in the morning. they immediate put my nephew in a ambulance drove him to the children hospital and put him in an intensive care unit. next day, he went into surgery. my nephew finally make a full recovery after three months and two operation. yeah maybe i will see a specialist if my wrist gets worst. thxs.

    Re: allergic to hospital.

    you can't stand hospital?

    the hospital loves me.

in the past couple of years, i have been to the hospital for things like: appendicitis, stitches for falling off a bike, bring a friend to hospital for cutting open his own thigh during snowboarding, and the best one:

bring my partner to the hospital for stitches coz i elbowed him in the forehand during a jumpsmash.

and who says badminton is a safe, non-contact sport?
