Aussie Girls Win Ladies Doubles Championships, Susan Shan WANG/ Renuga VEERAN (Australia) defeated LIM Pek Siah/ CHOR Hooi YEE (Malaysia).Caroline Toh, Renuga, Susan

The ladies doubles match between Shan WANG/ Renuga VEERAN (AUS) against LIM Pek Siah / CHOR Hooi Yee (MAS) was a very exiting one. LIM/CHOR opened up strongly in the first game and was able to win the majority of the long rallies that were a feature of the match. WANG/VEERAN had a number of serves but was unable to convert these to points. LIM/CHOR won the first game narrowly 15-13 after the Aussie girls settled down to the awe of the occasion but the crowd felt the match was still very open.

WANG/ VEERAN opened well in the second game that featured many spectacular rallies. All four players hitting many dropshots, smashes, overhead smashes, straight drives, cross-court shots and covering the court superbly. They dominated the second game and broke away with a run of points. WANG/VEERAN outclassed their fancied Malaysian pair boasting of LIM the reigning Commonwealth Games Manchester Gold medallist winning the second game convincingly 15-8.

The final game was a tight affair with both pairs of players using enormous amounts of energy on long rallies with neither pair gaining the ascendancy. There was a lot of feeling and passion on the court with all players urging themselves onto greater heights. LIM/CHOR lead at the change of ends and slowly pulled away but the Aussie girls WANG/VEERAN and was able to maintain their composure displaying poise and precision in their shots winning the decider 15-12. This was a pleasing result for a thoroughly engrossed crowd to see the local heroines create an upset against the world class professional players. The match was an enthralling 63 minutes that even drained the crowd just watching the event.

Hey, I've just noticed that the presenter on the far left is the former mayor of Strathfield council who is currently under investigation for alleged bribery!
