Sponsorship deals for players yet to be finalised

BY RAJES PAUL PETALING JAYA: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) players will be using their “old gears†in the US$250,000 Korean Open, which begins on Wednesday at Incheon City.

The BAM have yet to sign a deal with new title and equipment sponsors.

Their 10-year contract with Proton-EON as title sponsors ended in December last year. And a five-year deal with Gosen as the equipment sponsors also expired last year.

The BAM secretary, P. Ganga Rao, said yesterday: “We are in the midst of negotiations with several parties. We hope to strike deals soon.

“For now, the players will have to make do with what they have for the Korean Open.

“There will not be any uniformity for our players in the Korean Open. We have given them the freedom but we have reminded them not to have any logo on their racquet strings. They will use their old attire.â€

The Malaysian team for the six-star Korean Open left yesterday.

The BAM players in the fray are Kuan Beng Hong, Gan Teik Chai-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif, Ong Soon Hock-Tan Bin Shen and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Lin Woon Fui, Chin Eei Hui-Pei Tty, Ooi Sock Ai-Mooi Hing Yau and Fong Chew Yen-See Phui Leng.

The others are Nusa Mahsuri's Hashim brothers Roslin and Hafiz, Sairul Amar Ayob, M. Sutheaswari and Pei Wei Chung.

i wonder if Yonex will snatch up BAM as well in place of Gosen.

afterall, most of the Malaysian players are using Yonex anyway, Choong/Lee, WongCH, LeeCW, KKK, etc.

hmmmmmm

i remember hearing that BAM chose gosen over yonex coz gosen was offering more $$moolah$$ than yonex the last time. lets see what happens now???

karakal / proace / ashaway??? not likely. do they have that kind of budget to spend?
and carlton seem to have lost its grip on the malaysian market........
will international badminton continue to suffer from yonex monotony???

Welcome to BAM management.....it is so unprofessional of BAM to leave the team without a sponsor.....the management knew that their sponsorship deal was expiring end of last year and yet they didn't negotiate and find a new sponsor in advance...

Front runners for equipment sponsor is Yonex and Victor...I think Yonex is probably going to get the nod coz some of the t&c by Victor is probably unacceptable......but then again the BAM management team did visit the Victor factory in China end of last year.....so yet to be seen...if you know BAM, they will probably do something out of this world...
As for the local sponsor, the newspaper 'The Star' has been linked with a RM multimillion dollar sponsorship for 1 year....

This really shows that the people running the show in BAM are really living in the past.......Sports nowadays are closely linked with business. PBSI recently clinched a USD7.1m with Yonex over 7 years so I don't see why BAM can't close a deal.....they just didn't plan for it until it was too late....It was in the cards early on that Gosen's deal wasn't going to be renewed and Proton was more interested in the EPL.......So the question is why leave it till the very last minute.....

To me it is just purely bad management....if it was football or for the matter NBA,NFL or MLB, millions of dollars would be lost....imagine a player without a renewal contract with 6mths/1 year of his/her current contract to run.....

Time for BAM to act like a professional outfit and get professional people to run it.....afterall all the players under BAM are pros and deserve better....

assuming PBSI's deal, and 365 days / year, PBSI is getting on average ~US$2800/day.

given that BAM is probably not in as good a position to negotiate such a good deal, BAM may still be losing a potential US$2000/day without a good sponsor. and we are heading towards the end of the month, by then, BAM would've lost a potential US$60,000 in sponsorship money in January alone.

You are absolutely right Kwun.....PBSI will get the total USD 7.1m base of the performance of the players as well......
Like Kwun said, BAM is probably not in a good position as PBSI coz the Malaysian players have no consistency.....hopefully this will all change...BTW, BAM also gets funded from the National Sports Council(NSC)...With money from equipment, local and NSC, BAM should be doing much better....

Previously, BAM don't even have a physiotherapist, massuer, pyhsical trainer and nutritionist.....this year all this is about to change.....they are making use of more facilities and personnel employed by NSC.....in fact at this very moment, conditioning training is done twice a week at the National sports centre in Bukit Jalil....players have to go thru physical tests....it definitely looks like the future of badminton in Malaysia is definitely brighter :D

BADMINTON: BAM in line for big deal
K.M. Boopathy

Feb 6: THE BA of Malaysia (BAM) could receive a lucrative four-year deal from badminton equipment giant Yonex as it has already submitted a sponsorship proposal to the association. BAM terminated their contract with previous sponsors Gosen on a mutual agreement last October and the national team are currently without official equipment sponsors.

Gosen's five-year deal was in the form of US$200,000 (RM760,000) and equipment which was said to be close to RM1 million a year but Yonex's deal is said to be far more lucrative.

Sunrise Sports promotional manager Alice Lee confirmed that Yonex has already submitted a proposal to BAM and is expecting a final decision by the end of the month. Singapore-based Sunrise Sports is the sole distributor of Yonex products in South East Asia, East Asia, India and Sri Lanka.

Although Alice refused to give further details on the deal, it is learnt that Yonex's total annual sponsorship (in cash and kind) will be worth close to RM2 million.

BAM secretary P. Ganga Rao confirmed that Yonex is one of the equipment companies which has submitted proposals.

"We have received proposals from several parties, including Yonex, and the executive council had initial discussions on the matter," said Ganga yesterday.

"BAM have not made a final decision yet but our national shuttlers will be wearing the products of the new sponsors in the All-England next month."

According to sources, BAM also had discussions with Victor, a company which also deals in badminton products, but it is not expected to be able to match Yonex's proposal.

The All-England championships will be held in Birmingham on March 9-13 and with BAM desperately looking for a replacement, they are likely settle for the better deal offered by Yonex.

Yonex was BAM's sponsors previously but its relationship with the national body ended in 1998 and Gosen took over till the contract was terminated in October.

BAM's annual sponsorship from Proton and EON (RM1 million a year each) has also expired but it is learnt that Proton could be reconsidering their financial aid.
