PETALING JAYA: High hopes were placed on the men's doubles pairs but it was the women's pair of Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui, who stole the thunder for Malaysia in the German Open, which ended in Mulheim on Saturday.

The world number eighth played their hearts out to beat China's fifth ranked pair of Du Jing-Yu Yang 8-15, 17-16, 17-16 in the quarter-finals. But they ran out of steam, losing 1-15, 3-15 to another Chinese pair, second seeds Wei Yili-Zhao Tingting, in the semi-finals on Friday.

For Pei Tty-Eei Hui, it was only their second appearance in the semi-final of an international Grand Prix tournament.

They also made the same stage in the Taiwan Open last November.

The win against Du Jing-Yu Yang was also a sweet revenge for their defeat by the Chinese in the quarter-finals of the French Open last year.

If they keep up their performances, the duo are set to be the fist Malaysian women's pair to be seeded in the World Championships.

The duo, who train under former national doubles ace Cheah Soon Kit, have virtually sealed their place for the world meet, which will be played in Los Angeles in August.

Said national chief coach Yap Kim Hock: “Our women doubles players did well to reach the semi-finals. It is another achievement for beating a Chinese pair yet again.â€

Pei Tty-Eei Hui had beaten Yili-Tingting in the Singapore Open last year.

Kim Hock, however, was disappointed with the performances of his men's doubles charges.

Veterans Choong Tan Fook-Chew Choon Eng crashed out 15-7, 7-15, 11-15 to Indonesian youngsters Markis Kidho-Hendra Setiawan in the third round while Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat went down 9-15, 15-8, 12-15 against South Korean Jung Jae-sung-Lee Jae-jin in the quarter-finals.

“I hope that they will make a quick rebound in the All-England. The hope will certainly be on Chong Ming-Kien Keat to go far,†said Kim Hock.

The All-England in Birmingham starts with the qualifying tournament on Tuesday.

The tournament proper begins the next day.
