TheStar BIRMINGHAM: Malaysia enjoyed a good day at the All-England badminton Championships at the National Indoor Arena on Wednesday. All their six men's singles players advanced to the third round with youngster Kuan Beng Hong chalking up an upset win. The 21-year-old Beng Hong exacted revenge on 12th seed Anders Boesen, winning 15-11, 15-7 in the second round. He had lost to the Dane in the first round of the German Open last week. Beng Hong will take on teammate Lee Chong Wei for a place in the quarter-finals. Malaysian and Taiwan Open champion Chong Wei made the third round with a 15-8, 15-9 win over Singaporean Kendrick Lee. The match between Wong Choong Hann and Chen Yu was expected to go down the wire but the Malaysian packed off the Chinese in a straight games, winning 15-13, 15-10. Choong Hann will take on Taiwanese Liao Sheng-shiun in the third round. Veteran Mohd Roslin Hashim scored an easy 15-6, 15-7 win against Canadian Andrew Dabeka and has a tough third round opponent in second seeded Dane Peter Gade-Christensen. Roslin's younger brother and 2003 All-England champion Hafiz defeated Germany's Marc Zwiebler 15-8, 15-4 while Sairul Amar Ayob dropped a game against Danish youngster Michael Christensen before winning 15-5, 10-15, 15-1. Both Hafiz and Sairul will be up against opponents, who recorded big upset wins. Hafiz will play against Japanese Shoji Sato, who eliminated third seed and Singapore Open champion Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark in the second round. National team discard Sairul will play against South Korean Lee Hyun-il, who sent reigning world champion Xia Xuanze of China packing in the first round. Defending champion and top seed Lin Dan of China was made to work hard for his second round win over Denmark's Kasper Oedum. The Chinese won 15-7, 6-15, 15-7 and will play against England's Aamir Ghaffar in the third round. In the men's doubles, Malaysians Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock and Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat breezed into the second round and will be up against Koreans opponents – Han Sang-hoon-Hwang Ji-man and Jeon Jun-bum-Lee Ying-dae respectively. In the opening rounds, Soon Hock-Tan Bin Shen trounced Bertrand Gallet-Jean Michel Lefort of France 15-1, 15-11 while Chong Ming-Kien Keat eliminated Matthew Hughes-Martyn Lewis of Wales 15-3, 15-2. Choong Tan Fook-Chew Choon Eng, who had first round byes, will take on third seed Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China in the second round. Malaysia's sole women's singles representative Wong Mew Choo beat Estonian Kati Tolmoff 11-1, 11-1 to set up a meeting with Taiwanese Cheng Shao-chieh.
