i don't think we can miss the amazing string of tournaments that Xie has won recently. since October, Xie has won 6 consecutive tournaments: Denmark Open 5* German Open '04 3* China Open 6* Indonesia Open 5* German Open '05 3* All England 4* a couple of months back, when Xie Xingfang won the first 3 tournaments, many of us believe that she probably won because her strong compatriots, namely Zhang, Zhou and Gong were not present. however, after the latest 2 competitions where the others are present, including defeats of the strongest of the strongest, Zhang Ning 3 times. at this point, we undoubtedly can say that this 4th lady of the Chinese squad has finally risen and ready to take over.
She has been improving a lot hasn't she? Didn't people say something about her having some mental problems before and that was why she easily lost concentration or something??? Ironically, now that she's started dating Lin Dan, her results have improved ... whereas usally it does the opposite. Heehee, maybe Lin Dan's helping her.
Interesting point WoAiZhongGuo! Xie Xingfang is surely performing very well currently! On their side, Zhou Mi and Gong Ruina just don't seem up to it at the moment...

yep! Xie was great! but i think her real test maybe during the World Championship. If she won that tournament, then she will be the great WS player.
yea , she has had good year last year, and now she got her first ae title, shes good, i wonder why sometimes some place her as a second class player among other chinese ws players
well i think anyone who's been in some sort of tournament or competition that's very important to them would know... mentally is seriously half the game... and at their level... the difference in their abilities are very minimal... if i was the coach, i would rather have someone who can keep a cool head throughout the game and know what they're doing, than someone who has slightly better strokes, or footwork, or stamina but lose points 'cause they're nervous and don't know what they're doing... that's probably why she wasn't picked as top 3 ws for the chinese team
Back when Zhou, Gong and Zhang were the dominating force, Xie stayed in the shadow. But that does not mean she was not performing well. She still defeated most of the other players in the world. She lost occassionally to players like Jun Jae-Youn, but most of all, she usually lost to the top 3 Chinese. Now that Mia and Jun's form have not been fully regained, and a sudden drop of form of Zhou, Gong (who are even losing to non-Chinese players) and Zhang (whose stamina is not up to scratch), naturally Xie comes to the fore. I think we should not read too much into the recent tournament wins. They were confidence-boosting wins for sure and she will bring this confidence to future tournaments, but to be the top player in the world? I don't know. I think Zhang will come back and take it back. We'll see.

I said when she won AE, that she was a doubles specialist in WJC WD and XD in when GongR won WS (1998). GongR went straight into the senior ranks - surprisingly, which then had Ye, GongZC as well as Zhou, Zhang and the other one who lost fo Camila in the WC. She switched into singles and lost often in the QF or SF to the big 3 and was often excluded from the main events - the latest being the WC and Olympics when she was No.4 and 6 but could not get a brith. Her emergence was the trip to Germany as consolation prize for being left behind in the Olympics - same for Xia. It is true that you must have it in you to win and to win 6 times in a row, including beating the big 3 is proof that she is a high flyer in singles not a supporting caste. Few have ever done that. She will certainly make it near the WC finals if not win it, but how many top Chinese players won the AE and WC in their whole careers? Y
Was the qualification criterion different for MS and WS for WC 2003? In MS, China had 4 players: Chen Hong, Xia Xuanze, Bao Chunlai and Lin Dan. Malaysia had 4 MS players as well: Wong Choon Hann, Roslin Hashim, Hafiz Hashim and Lee Tsuen Seng. Was there a restriction to maximum 3 WS players per governing body?
For the Olympics, the maximum is always 3. For the WC, the maximum is 4 as long as all four are in the top 8. I have forgotten what happened in 2003.
