When I'm serving in doubles, I have my racket and birdy about a foot away from my body, I then pull it back and wait (say 2 seconds) then serve it. Is it legal to pull back and then hold it? Or do you need to do it all in one motion. I always thought that only the foward motion needs to be in one movement

I'm pretty sure it's legal, when you do your backhand serve, you flick it back and hold it, then flick it forward, that's still one motion. Lol.

Yep, your serve doesn't begin until you do the forward motion with the racquet.

One thing to keep in mind is that I have seen many players who present the shuttle and then move their racquet towards the shuttle to get ready. This technically could be considered the start of your serve. The correct way is to present your racquet first, then present the shuttle in front of the racquet, move the racquet back and then forward to start the serve.
