Poor fellow had to settle for a SUV (Stupid Ugly Vehicle) that sucks both on-road and off-road :p

Guess he bought it for the trunk-space :-D

the number plate does reflect the truth, an X5 is really expensive.

In fact, it should be "518" (with "1" pronounced "yi") which reads "I am already prosperous". But this doesn't leave much scope for even greater riches in the future.

PS I just can't refrain myself from going there and peeling off the snoopy sticker (next to the fuel lid)...

PPS he must also have a normal house somewhere out of town, instead of just an apartment. You just never see that many trees in central Beijing.

I got these prices off www.bmw.ca

    X5 3.0i - CAD 58,800
    4.4i - CAD 71,700
    4.8i - CAD 96,500

Mainland China's import duty is higher than Canada's. A good rule of thumb is to add 20% to 50% on top of the Canadian retail prices.

Doing business in Mainland China requires frequent contact with government officials - wine and dine. It is very important to show face and status. So, I am not surprised LYB has a X5.

Actually, it makes more sense for him to have a BMW (rather than a Mercedes). In Beijing, there are a couple of Merc dealers, but only one BMW dealer. This means it is very inconvenient to drive one (you have to go all the way to that one dealer for servicing). So a BMW is reserved for the elite. And yes, the X5 definitely stands out, although once I noticed a Hummer H2 cruse by...

So You say it makes sense for him to choose the most "inconvenient" alternative.. Becuse it's more "exlusive"

I say it's strange when status is more important than function and performance ;-).. But I guess even bad stuff can be sold given the right marketing message ;-D

An X5 for me is like an 150g short-shaft racket with extreme head-heaviness, flexy shaft and a big price-tag , that comes in cool colors with a high-tec bag included :p

yupe, merc B. are common in HK and china. It doesnt stand out as much as a bmw.
I know a guy who is shopping between Merc. and bmw. He didnt like merc. salesmanship and bought a bmw instead. If u check recalls. merc suv's have more recall than the x5

lol...its for the image and he's got the money. its like buying hummers, merc jeeps....it happens

why dont the royals across the world drive themselves (less expenses), have smaller cars (since they always drive in a massive convoy anyway) so that they are more fuel efficient, dont have leather since its expensive and doesn't make the car faster etc :p

they got the money, we dont:p

Well I sure got the money to buy a hummer or X5.. but I think they suck

Talking about Royals, at least I know the Swedish King likes to drive fast cars, rather than to be driven in convoys :p

People that know even more than "something" about automotive engineering wouldn't diss Mercs and their technology.. Quiz.time: Was it a merc engine or BMW engine that won the last F1 race??

    /Twobeer & FingerPower

P.S. You cannot compare an A-klasse merc to a M6 BMW, nor would you like to compare an Merc SLR mclaren to an X3 :D D.S.

aren't you forgetting that BMW bought Rover for the Land Rover technology?
X5 is ok off-road if you put some off-road tyres on.

BMW X-series and BMW Mini => success
    Rover => failure :(
