    Wow

It would be interesting to know the speed:
    • As the shuttle leaves the racket
    • When it hits the floor (or opponent's racket)
    • Averaged over the flight

I would love to try and return one of those smashes using nylon shuttles !!!:D :D

That test was done during a game. If a smashing contest is held as a separate contest, like best speed of 5 smashes, by smasher specialist, i'm sure speed would exceed that of fu's 332 kph. (similar to longest distance drive contest in golf)

    fastest

Badminton stakes claim as fastest racquet sport

BEIJING: Badminton can firmly stake its claim to be the worlds fastest racket sport, with smashes reaching speeds of up to 332 kph (207 mph) so far at testing during the Sudirman Cup in Beijing.

The International Badminton Federation is conducting speed trials for the first time at one of its major events, with microwave sensors recording the speed of smashes on the main court at the world mixed team championships.

Chinese doubles star Fu Haifeng has clocked the fastest smash of 332 kph so far, while world number two Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark has recorded the fastest smash for a singles player at 298 kph (185 mph).

And with womens singles shuttler Huang Sui hitting at 257 kph (160 mph), tennis star Andy Roddicks world-record serve of 246 kph (153 mph) is some way off of badmintons blistering pace.

"The speed and agility of these athletes is just amazing," said Alex Loccisano, whose Melbourne-based company is providing the specialist sensors and software, which have also been used at major cricket and tennis events.

"Badminton can certainly consider itself to be the worlds fastest racket sport, and at this rate, will force this speed testing technology to move forward pretty quickly in order to keep up."

The equipment is currently only able to record speeds of up to around 350 kph (217 mph), so todays star shuttlers are already pushing the limits. The biennial Sudirman Cup, currently in its ninth edition, ends on Sunday.

China are favourites to win back the title they lost to South Korea two years ago in Eindhoven.

    And probably the slowest

Had anybody heard about slowest racquet sport?

I can guess that badminton could contest for this record also. I mean very weak strokes while playing near net's top.

So, if this is true, badminton could be nominated also as a sport with the widest dynamical diapason!

I guess you could be right. Net plays often make a shuttle to flip anti-clockwise in the air at Zero "forward" velocity for split second before falling perpendicularly down to the ground.

Is the fastest sport "Quasar", the game where you try to shoot your opponent with a laser gun, to gain points for your team?

    I'd be interested in knowing:
    • Speed of racket face during stroke
    • "Speed of wrist"
Just because, I'm wondering just how much of that extra oomph comes from the flex of the shaft and the strings...?

Does anyone know how fast squash can be? I think it should be quite fast if not as fast as badminton.

Good thing the word 'racquet' was in the title, else I'd say Formula 1.
    Top speed of 379 kmph.

I don't think squash is quite as fast as badminton. There is no equivalent of the badminton smash in squash. However, squash can be very punishing although the elapsed time between shots is not as short as in badminton.
