That depends on a number of factors, firstly how old are you? How often do you play? With whom do you play? Do you get coaching? What is your idea of good player (club standard or county standard or more ambitious, International level? Try to be more specific and you will find the replies likewise. Thanks.

If you practise 5x per week, then about 3 years are needed to learn the basics, another 3 years to learn the small details
(heard on TV). This refers to international players.

But, you've got to remember other factors too. Like the size of your body, how fit are you, how tall are you. And most of all is the commitment. You must think about playing badminton all the time......LOL... :)
a small factor is also the talent......

    Zero,

Actually, I do think that all else being equal, talent makes 99% of the best players in the world. If you've seen the top Indonesian doubles players play 'live', Tony, Candra, Sigit and Halim, you'll realise that they are uncommon. Not in their skills at the game but the quickness of thought in their gameplay and their vision.

I have to say, they can catch an opponents weakness just by 1 or 2 rallies. That's why they keep winning.

In my opinion, they are very intelligent players.

Good point Gladius. I agree that talent makes most of the best players. But to play at the best, you must be wise and intelligent and all that can be gained from experience.

    Plotting a rally

I know one needs to think (for 2-3 shots ahead) before he/she serves or receives services. Do you guys (is it possible) to plot for moves as you go in the
middle of a rally? In this regard, is badminton somewhat like, Uhh, chese?

How realistic is it to plot more than 2 moves at a time? And if realistic, what
is the avenue to develop this kind of "thinking" ability?

Raymond, your are touching upon the very nature of EXPERIENCE. And, as we all know, there are no shortcuts...

I disagree 100%. I played on the UK junior circuit regularly with all the UK 's top players and was similarly ranked but didn't turn pro. You can spot talent at around 12 years old. Hard work, training and experience will pay off, but if the player is untalented and unintelligent there is only so far they will go.
