Hi, everybody! I've a question about towel grips. I'm a heavy sweater, and so, I'm forced to use the towel grip. For the past 2 months, I've been using a towel grip without changing it, and it seemed that I've lost a lot of power because of slip. Now, after I changed the grip last Saturday, I suddenly got my power back. My smashes, clears are great. I think that's because it doesn't slip.

My question is, how long can a towel grip last? I play at least once a week for about 2.5 hours. Sometimes, I'll play more than once a week, but that's rare. Based on your experience, how long should I change the grip once? Thanx a lot!!!

Everyone change their grip within different timeframe. Just change yours according to your own preference! :)

It usually lasts about 5-6 sessions for me at the most. Sometimes less even. This works out to about just 10-12 hours.

Just remember to air you racket, especially your handle after the your game. Just use a dirty towel or shirt to wipe dry the grip and leave it to dry overnight before keeping it. I found that it stretches the durability by about 30-50% just doing this.

Also, it prevents your rackets from smelling too badly with sweat.

    I have the same problems.

After getting fed up of changing towelling grips so often, I switched to thin grips plus various accessories to prevent slipping.

I did try the Fleet grip which was OK at first but after a few time of play, became unsuitable.

Presently, I use a Mizuno grip which is excellent. It's a thin grip with a layer of sponge that runs down the centre rather like a monorail. These last more than a month. I put another ordinary thin grip underneath just to absorb a little more sweat.

Yonex did have one type that was similar in having the sponge design. This one had two strips of sponge running down the centre looking like two the rails for trains. However, the grip and perspiration absorption was inferior to the Mizuno grip.

A towel grip can last as long as you want it to. I find that my towel grips will last a few weeks at least. A good tip is to try grip powder. I also sweat a lot, and I use Ashaway grip power on the grip after the first game. It soaks up the sweat but is not tacky and horrible like some other grip powders. Give it a shot, and if it doesnt work, change the grip!

By the way, the idea of airing the grip is also an excellent idea and will make them last longer.

Hi. I'm fortunate that my palm isn't sweaty so I don't really need the towel grip however, some people use the towel grip because their arms get sweaty and it drips towards the racquet handle.

I would suggest you get the towel grip roll which is good for approximately 15 replacements. It's cheaper than having to buy single towel grips everytime. Check this out-

    Cheers! :)

mine always get hard after two/three uses. just grab your racket with your left arm ath the shaft/head and your right at the grip. and gently/roughly "sand" the grip with your right hand. it'll become softer. another fun trick I saw at my new club:

get a really old shuttle, grab your racket. and set the bird on your grip, firmly. note; the shuttle is nwo officially ruined. and then roughly "comb" your grip with the shuttle. for me I now see dust coming of my grip...and it feels better now. softer
