I think he was the player who bring Badminton to more attack game. Liem Swie King was the first (I think) attacking badminton player. King was famous for his 'King smash'. But YY brought more attack, especially his jump-smash was very deadly.
also cos he is the only mens singles player to defend the world title:- 1987 he beat morten frost and in 1989 he beat ardy wiranata.
Yang Yang was a very fast attacking player with a very complete set of skills and a relentless attack.His defence was also superb but more importantly was how he could nail the line with his smashes creating impossible angles which you had to contend with.I think in his time aside from being so dominate there was just no single player who had any success in beating him and the only people who come to mind that I saw was Morten Frost and Ardy Wiranata both could defend and run forever.His consistency was what made him outstanding as like I said his smashes so often were dead on the line.His mental strength was also a very defining characteristic.He never looked worried and he seemed to show little or no emotion when he played making it very frustrating as an opponent as it was like playing the great stonewall of china.Anyways those are the reflections I had of him that in my mind made him a legend.
I remembered reading an article about Yang Yang and Zhao Jianhua long time ago. Yang was very hardworking and also did extra practise. Zhao was not as discipline and like to goof off during practise. Yang was very neat at everything and dress tidily and comb his hair very neatly. Zhao was a little bit "sloppy". Maybe that shows in their playing style also. Both are attacking players, but Zhao made way more careless mistakes than Yang.
I bought AE89 DVD from Han (han_cheong@yahoo.com). It shows the MS final between Yang Yang and Morten Frost. Great match. And also in the DVD - the 2 WS legends - Susi Susanti and Li Ling Wei.
sorry, a little out from the topic what is the special thing about "king smash" that differs it from an ordinary smash ? can anybody tells me ???
maybe king smash means, fastest smash (maybe even can force the shuttle to smash through the small net hole... ), most deadly angle
I was quite young during Yang Yang's days, but what I remember about his smash is that he seems to hang in the air forever. Then he swings his arm and just a moment before the racquet strikes the shuttle, a little twist in the wrist drives the shuttle in an arc to another area altogether.
