I don't hear very much about this club from our west Canadian contigent. Is it a good place to play at?
The facility is excellent but the price is simply out of reach for most Vancouverites. You get free (hot) bath towels, soap, shampoo, plastic bat t to hold soiled clothes, wash clothes to wipe hands, hair conditioner and hair dryer services. This club is just like HK's member's only club. People there tend to be snob . . . snob .
There are four courts. Pretty good visibility. Gets very hot in the summer. They hold some tourneys there..its great because all the shower facilities are excellent..and you don't have to bring your own towels. There also is a good restaurant, pool, lounge, weightroom, tennis courts for the members.
Sounds like a very nice facilities. Do you know how much is the membership fees and court fee as well?
For a couple, the initiation fee is CAD$17,500 and total monthly fee is approximately CAD$345. You also need a few references from members. I am sure the cost of this club is nothing compared to what is available in Hong Kong and Japan. Please check www.vanlawn.com
VLTC has reciprocal arrangement with clubs in HK: Ladies' Recreation Club and Kowloon Cricket Club. Philippines Tower Club, Makati City Singapore Pinetree Town and Country Club - I think Loh mentioned this club already. Singapore Recreation Club
The VLT is a not a badminton specific club. To be fair to the Vancouver Lawn and Tennis Club, it is not strictly just badminton club. It is a lifestyle recreation club that includes tennis, squash, swimming and badminton. Other similar clubs around town include Hollyburn, and Arbutus. These other clubs also have skating rinks and curling rinks. These clubs provide for a one stop sports recreational center for families that can afford it. For the rest of us that live on hamburgers and hotdog instead of filet mignon and lobster, we have a vast range of affordable community centers and drop-in clubs that will have us... :crying:
With that kind of money for membership.. i might as well save up and build my own court! I can wear what i want and eat what i want.. home cooked as well. But of course for that amount, you pay for quality and service, for some its recognition. I have a free membership in TowerClub in Manila. Hardly use it. The place is nice and comfy.. but sometimes people pay , but we dont really use it. Just a waste of money.
Do you think they can offer a different service? Badrad mentioned the lifestyle recreational facilities. Presuming that these clubs are for those who can pay, maybe these clubs offer a social network and contacts?
These types of clubs used to be called "Country Clubs". Over the years the VLT has softened it's positioning on membership, but not by much. In the past, my understanding of the membership required that you needed to be nominated and at least 6 members to approve your application for membership. That's even before they ask about your money. It's presumed that you wouldn't be nominated unless you can afford to be a member. I seem to recall being told some of the members included a lot of Vancouver's rich and famous. Much of the club, as Cheung mentioned, is social and some join for various gain other than sports. The other point is the location of the club does tend to tell all. It is just at the outskirts of the Shaunessy area, one of Vancouver's older wealthiest districts. Hollyburn is also nestled in one of the more affluent areas on West Vancouver. The VRC is gently surrounded by middle income housing, and sitting behind a delapidated baseball stadium. I played as a guest in this club for quite a few times in the past. Trust me, the entire facility is very nice and edging towards a resort. However, the folks there are not the average Vancouver joe. Should I say there are lots of old English folks there with a by-gone politicial attitude - very similar before HK's handover.
