I'm around 174cm tall and I have a friend who is around 180cm. When I play with him, he seems to have an easier time with fast drops and smashes. I think this is because of the extra height he's got. I know in sports like volleyball and basketball extra heights give a significant advantage. What about badminton? How much of an advantage does height give and is there an ideal height to be in badminton?

Well it depends , being tall or short both has its advantages and disadvantages . i/e . Tall = BIG target to be smashed at but can produce a steeper angle of overhead shots btw ... also see http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20635&highlight=ideal+height
I'm 5'10" and I still don't think that's tall enough for me. I would like to be at least 6'1" or 6'2" then I'll be unstoppable. Lol.
Well.. being tall might be good as u can hit a steeper angle for smahes. However it still depends on the skill level and the footwork of the tall guy.. if he doesn't has a good footwork, his would be moving much slower around the court although he has long legs..
Well, most asians born in America and raised here usually grow tall because of milk and proper food. Asians are seemingly getting taller and taller nowadays. I'm chinese and I thought 5'10" was tall for being chinese until I saw others who were taller than me. Sure 5'10" is above average but being taller would be nice. Good reach and jump, not to mention you would look better in clothing too.
Dave18 is right, im 14 and only 5"7, but my friend who is also asian (vietnamese) us only 13 but hes 6"4 . I wish i was taller because being tall gives you more advantages in mostly everything you do BTW i was born in vietnam and my friend was raised here.
Like LB said, if height was the case, all the 'short' players would be disadvantaged.... Mmm. Let's see, Taufik? Lin Dan??? Yap Kim Hock??? Candra / Sigit??? They're not considered 'tall' by your standards are there
But taller than your average asian? Height is not a factor in badminton but it does help you for that extra reach. Lin-Dan-fan, being tall doesn't neccessarily mean that you have an advantage over everything. Sometimes being too tall may lead to you having a hunchback so you much have good posture to look good. There are other disadvantages too.
Short guy : Hey man DUCK!! Tall guy : Duck?? *Tall guy hits the low ceiling* Short guy : You Ok?? Tall guy : Hahaha yea.
It might not look like it does but it does have a great role. A tall player has better reach meaning he has to move lesser for every return and then of course is the obvious shot making advantage for the taller player like fast drops etc. In most cases maye we can assume that the taller player has more natural raw power[of course only if he has the technique can he utilize the power]
wow you guys are giants ~! I'm 14 ( in August ) and I'm only 5 feet . I guess genetics might have something to do with your height as well .
Hey there seems to be alot of 14 years olds here ( me too in Sep ). Yes they seem kinda tall...im only abt 5"3
I'm 187 cm. dont know what that is in feet or whatever Being in japan it is certainly funny how the 'lifts' or clears end up at a perfect smash height right before the 1st baseline
Height is good! I have a friend who is at least 6'3 in height and he has no problem with clears and especially smahes. It is his height that gives him an advantage and also makes his shots more accurate because he is able to see better as to where he wants to hit making him unstoppable.
Well I'm 185cm, think that is 6,4 tall. My dad is 197cm, so i think i will be a bit higher, for me thats a strenght!
