In the official programme of the just concluded Aviva Open Singapore 2005, there is an article titled “Virtual Reality of Badminton”. In it, www.badmintoncentral.com is one of the websites featured.

The introduction to this article reads,

“When serious fans of badminton aren’t playing the game, they’re usually reading or talking about it. And increasingly, this exchange of ideas takes place on the world-wide web. Did you know that if you type the word ‘badminton’ into a search engine, you can access more than 4 million listings related to the sport? Type ‘badminton website’, and in a split second, you will have more than 170,000 websites from which to choose.”

The following websites were featured or mentioned in this article:

    www.worldbadminton.net

    www.asianbadminton.org.my

    www.badmintoncentral.com

    www.badders.com

    www.worldbadminton.com

    Mandarin badminton forums:

    www.badmintonfan.com/bbs/index.htm

    www.cbcbadminton.com/luntan/index2.asp

    www.badmintoncn.com/bbs/index.asp

The write-up for www.badmintoncentral.com is as follows:

“If you want to chat with other badminton aficionados living around the world, you have come to the right place! The bulletin board service on this website offers some of the most well-informed and opinionated discussion on all issues related to badminton. But be nice. It’s a friendly board, and we’re sure they aim to keep it that way! The website also runs stories on news, training, players, events but we log on regularly for the forum discussions. The posters don’t always agree with each other, but it’s clear that they have one thing in common: a passion for badminton. The board has good international representation (so, it isn’t dominated by one viewpoint) and the posters seem like a genuinely helpful bunch. Need some advice on the best lens to use for badminton photography? Ask here. Looking for some video downloads from a specific match? Someone here can probably help. Does anyone remember who won the Men’s Singles event at the Asian Championships in 1976? We’ll bet that someone here can probably tell you. What more could you want from a forum?”

Below is the text of the article for your reading pleasure. BC has the longest and imho one of the best reviews among the sites featured. Three cheers to Kwun, the moderators, forum posters and all involved in making BC such a success among badminton supporters, enthusiasts and fanatics

    The Virtual Reality of Badminton

When serious fans of badminton aren’t playing the game, they’re usually reading or talking about it. And increasingly, this exchange of ideas takes place on the world-wide web. Did you know that if you type the word ‘badminton’ into a search engine, you can access more than 4 million listings related to the sport? Type ‘badminton website’, and in a split second, you will have more than 170,000 websites from which to choose.

Individual country federation sites offer the latest news on happenings within their own borders so be sure to check them out if you’re looking for something specific. Here are some of the more useful sites on badminton.

    www.worldbadminton.net
This well-organized site is the official web home for the International Badminton Federation, which sets the rules and regulations for elite-level badminton around the world. (Yes, you should have the rules at your finger tips, even if you don’t commit them to memory!) We love the news magazine format, because it’s easy on the eyes and entertaining to read. Coverage is diversified and timed to badminton events around the world. Player rankings are updated regularly, and you can use this site to discover where your favorite player is ranked.

    www.asianbadminton.org.my
Welcome to the official website voice for the Asian Badminton Confederation. This website has a business-like tone to its writing and layout, but it maps the World Badminton website very effectively. The site has up-to-date Asian news on the sport. History buffs will appreciate the listings on several Asian tournaments, including the Asian Badminton Championships, the Asian Junior Championships and the Asian Cup. The site also contains a list of umpires by country.

If you want to chat with other badminton aficionados living around the world, you have come to the right place! The bulletin board service on this website offers some of the most well-informed and opinionated discussion on all issues related to badminton. But be nice. It’s a friendly board, and we’re sure they aim to keep it that way! The website also runs stories on news, training, players, events but we log on regularly for the forum discussions. www.badders.com
Billing itself as ‘the independent voice of badminton’, this U.K.-based website has interviews, articles and tournaments news. Not surprisingly, given its physical address, the site leans towards material of interest in the UK. However, it does carry news and opinion from elsewhere in the world of badminton, too. In fact, it encourages readers to send in articles to run on the site. It also has a forum specially tailored to rising young players as well as a service or players who now are merely young-at-heart. With its saucy little devil logo, Badders is run entirely by volunteers and funded out of their own pockets. According to the website itself, “Badders.com was conceived in the winter of 1999 and after gallons of coffee, many late nights, a few false starts the site was born in the early hours of the 10th January 2002.” There are no annoying pop ups that occur on many home grown websites. All in all, it’s an easy-going and easy-navigating site. Definitely worth a look.

    www.worldbadminton.com
If you have been playing badminton for years, this rather pedestrian site is not for you. It is not particularly well organized, and a lot of its links are out of date. So, why are we bothering to include it? Well, if you’re relatively new to badminton, this site has a fairly comprehensive selection of video clips from past tournaments. You can download clips of important matches that you heard people talking about it. You also can surf your way through a tutorial for beginner badminton players. Some links contain information that is completely free of charge; others are fee-based, so surf wisely.

    Mandarin badminton forums:
    www.badmintonfan.com/bbs/index.htm

    www.cbcbadminton.com/luntan/index2.asp

    www.badmintoncn.com/bbs/index.asp
These Chinese-language forums offer every nugget of information possible about badminton. Whether you are a badminton coach or a player, you can find fellow aficionados, useful tournament updates and local badminton community news. Forum members exchange training tips and techniques and explore points of view in virtual space. It is a great platform for badminton fans to interact and arrange for games in real life, too. And, you can even find the latest in badminton fashion and technology!
