If I was with my badminton buddies, I'd probably do a jump smash ;)

But if you were to do against the main stream crowd, how would you do it?

True, but the crowd may mistake that for a tennis serve. A better alternative is to perfrom a backhand short serve.

I'd do one of the following:

    (1) A forehand serve -- afaik, no other racket sports has anything similar,
especially when you swing your racket arm higher above your shoulder.

    (2) Backhand clear -- afaik, no other racket sports has anything similar either

The forearm swing might be mistaken for baseball throw. But then again, if people were doing baseball, they'd probably be batting heh.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I know next to nothing about baseball/softball), when
you throw the baseball, don't you fold your arm in the first phase of the throwing?
In a forehand serve, the racket arm should start pointing at the floor, then with
a smooth motion it goes up to hit the shuttle -- therefore it's quite different
    from baseball/softball.

sad to say - if you were playing charades with the main stream crowd - imitate serving or hitting the bird like you were playing backyard or picnic badminton. they might more easily recognize those motions than the proper form. correctness or elegance is lost on the ignorant masses.

In the badminton videos I've watched, the forehand serve looks different than moves of any other sports.... So I'll say forehand serve
