Well, I've got a problem. Okay, it's like this. I'm supposed to join a mix doubles tournament in August. Which is right in the before my exam trials(not that important to me, important to parents though as it'll help me get into a good stream and class next year). Now, my parents left the choice to me. They told me if I know I can handle both, then I may join the tournament. I know I can handle both.. just that I'm not really keen on mix doubles, plus I don't know my supposed-to-be partner well. But at the same time I'm worried about letting him down as his dad went through a lot of trouble to try to find time to train him together with me. What would you do? Join it so as not to let him down? Yet I think I'll be happier if I don't join it. I hate decisions like these.
Just go with what you think is best, theres not much you can do about it if your hands being forced. Do you want to play mixed doubles, which im guessing may hurt your exams... Or do you leave out the mixed doubles but disappoint your partner... Which is more important to you? Nobody can make the decision for you.
That's right.. only you can make that decision for yourself . I'd have to say that your dilemma is a bum to overcome..
does your XD partner know about your dilemma? He may agree to play, even though you have exams to worry about as well and understand that you may not be able to give 100% in time training and stuff like that... or if he is ultra-competitive and wants a completely dedicated partner (not saying you aren't, but you admit that you have exams on) he still has time (maybe?) to find another partner
Yup, I agree with one of the post above.... One of the two choices must be more important. And you should go with it. like... What will give you the worst results, doing bad on the exam or letting your partner down. Choice is yours.
We can't decide for you, but you know, you said that can handle both the exam and the tournament. So why not go, you might even have fun and win.
To me, if you could handle both competently, by all means do both. But, if you could only manage a so-so job, then i guess you should concentrate on your trial exam. Were you referring to the trial exam required in form 3 or 5? If yes, those exams are important to your future career.
Thanks for your replies. I'm joining the tournament because I found out it's from the 5th-7th August. Before my exams, and Friday+weekend. So I won't be missing school(as I initially thought). Between singles, doubles and XD, I must say I dislike XD the most. Lol. I feel utterly useless, and as the girl I'm most likely to get attacked.. Still, it'll be fun. I hope. Will be playing under the U14 category. Kamen, I'm form 3.
How good is your partner? Perhaps he should play more setup shots for you. The lady in the mixed doubles is quite vital to the team's offensive as the more threatening she is, the more the other side will lift. It's quite hard to play front as you have to constantly be aware of what shots to take or let go. If your partner is weak, you're gonna get dinged alot. Good luck with your exams and your tourny!
My partner is far from weak. ;-) He's definitely much much better than me, so I consider it an 'honour' that he chose me to be his partner. Infact, I'm very worried that I'll be the cause of our downfall. My coach told me that if I partner him, we've a very good chance of taking the title. We played against a few pairs of men in the hall, and we beat them all. Quite easily too. Now, my usual partner and I(girl doubles) would have a lot of trouble beating these pairs. No doubt he's good. Gotta improve being in front!
Good for you Joanne. Glad to hear that you've come to a decision that'll work out for ya. Good luck for the tourney and most of all, your exams .
it's good to take up the tournament. If either exam or tournament turn out not so good, u have a reason to give to your parents.
Nah, I promised myself that no one should ever tell me that badminton caused me to fare poorly in school. As a matter of fact, I seem to do better with badminton around. Take the Thomas Cup for instance-I did the best ever in many years after studying+watching the television. *Off to train.. and study a lil' bit*
We did it! My partner and I took the gold for the U14 category. Beat the pair in semi finals 15-5, 15-10, and finals 15-1, 15-6. I'm really happy. This is one of my best achievements. We beat district players(and some of these district players knocked out state players) all the way into finals, and met district players there too. The both of us are only school players, we were not selected to represent our district this year. Guess my coach's training programme really works. How we won? They didn't get a chance to attack us at all. As the front person I kept pushing half court, full court, and netting. No lifting at all. When my opponent did a flick service, I smashed it down. Overall I think I lifted twice and lobbed once(caught me offguard a few times, no choice, had to give a high ball). My partner? He was awesome. His smashes were powerful. It was easy to wait at the net for a weak return to tap it down. But yeah, the important thing is that we did it. 15-1, 15-6. I really didn't expect to beat some of them, the last 3 pairs we met(QF, Semis, and Finals) were strong. But we didn't play so well in the finals. Lol. We were the centre of attention. There were a couple of VIPs watching. And I was just plain nervous. My service went slightly high a few times. Got a gold medal, Dunlop Racquet, Dunlop racquet bag, food hamper. But those things didn't really matter to me(another badminton bag?? Haven't even used the last one I got yet!). This tournament just gave me a great feeling of satisfaction. Players who trained together for months just for this tournament lost.. Some players even travelled from other states to take part in it. But still? Give me singles/doubles anytime! XD is really a... stressful game. Lol. After it all, I still feel useless. All I did was net, push and tap. Nothing else.
