KUALA LUMPUR: The World Championships-bound badminton players will make a trip up to the Genting Highlands next week. But no, they are not heading to the casino.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) are instead gambling on having high-altitude training for the whole Malaysian contingent just three weeks before the world meet. The world meet will be played in Anaheim, California, from Aug 15-21.

The Highlands training to strengthen the players will include running up and down part of the hill and court training.

National chief coach Yap Kim Hock said there would be no risk of players getting injured during the five-day stint.

“We know what we are doing. There is a reason for the high altitude training and this stint has been agreed to by all the coaches,” Kim Hock said after a training session at the Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara here yesterday.

“Of course, we will not overstrain the players.”

Kim Hock said the five-day stint would be vital as the players go into their final preparations for the world meet.

“It will be good for the players to be in a different environment and get away from their monotonous training routines. It will also help strengthen them physically,” said Kim Hock.

“The training will be tough and we plan to make them run uphill and downhill. It is not going to be all fun for them.”

“All the world meet-bound players – both men and women – will train together at Genting. We are also bringing our sparring players up there. The team will leave on Tuesday,” he added.

The men qualifiers under the BAM banner are men's singles Lee Chong Wei, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Wong Choong Hann; the men's doubles pair Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat, Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Lin Woon Fui, Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock and Choong Tan Fook-Chew Choon Eng.

The women players for the California trip are women's singles shuttler Wong Mew Choo and doubles players Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, Ooi Sock Ai-Mooi Hing Yau and Fong Chew Yen-See Phui Leng.
