In all of Badminton Central members' hearts, we all know its not lame.
Lately, I've been feeling happy when i hear people say badminton is a bad sport, because i know that jerk won't be taking part in something spectacular.

It was probably made by a tennis fanatic who went around bashing every other sport in order to gather attention for speedminton. They even have tennis player endorsements and it's meant to be played on a tennis court.

in the TV series FRIENDS, when Ross (Dave Schimmer) wanted to prove he is a tough man by playing rugby, Rachel (Jen Aniston) told him "Ross, you couldn't even beat my father in badminton.".... That moment on, i became a FRIENDS' ANTI

i also saw this movie preview on TV, where a boy was trying to learn hockey and he saw two guys bashing in the ice rink. and u know what he said when he saw that???? he said, in this really scared voice, "I think i'll join the badminton team instead"...

Whoever are making this script is g2 be on my hitlist if i hear it again on national Television....arg

What are you getting so riled up about. The movie wasn't even suggesting that badminton involves no skill or endurance. The point was that badminton involves no physical contact - which is true. There are no chances of physical confrontations with hulking, 250-pound neanderthals in game of singles.

It's perfectly understandable when people brush off badminton as a "sissy" sport, since most peoples' definition of "sissy" is "lack of bone-crunching physical contact".

Or "not every athlete is 7 feet tall, weighs 400 pounds, and ripped like a bodybuilder".

Or "doesn't have massive corporate endorsements, media coverage, and teen-idol superstars who give the sport a sexy image".

Or "Gatorade hasn't included it in one of its commercials".

The preconception that "only wimps play badminton" actually rings true at many venues, especially at highschools and universities. I know this since most people on my highschool badminton team, and at the local recreation clubs, are unfit, unathletic, and uncoordinated. They only joined the team because badminton was easy to learn, and because they sucked at all the "real" sports.

They play because it's asy for them to compete against other untalented recreational players, and not be embarassed or roughed up (such as in a game of pick-up basketball, or touch football).

Of course, elite badminton players are extremely athletic, but you have to admit that a significant portion of badminton players are wimpy amateurs who give the game a bad image.

I'm with this guy on this one. Badminton isn't a big sport in australia and especially in my highschool, people pick badminton as a sport only to bludge around and do nothing. The misconception is when other people see these guys, they assume that this is how the game is played. On top of that, they think that badminton is such a sissy sport that they give me crap for being in the college team! They've never even seen a real game of badminton before!

I think every sport has its fair share of "wimpy amateurs" though I would rather call them "newbies." I play basketball too and believe me, I've seen worse.

"There are no chances of physical confrontations with hulking, 250-pound neanderthals in game of singles." Actually there still is, if you are playing a hulking 250-lb neanderthal poor sport after making him run all over the court with drops and cross-court clears and then smashing the shuttlecock right into his ... after a short lift. :D

I really don't care if people think badminton as a "sissy" sport. It's their loss.

ah the age old topic of badminton as a sissy sport...could and will go on for a long time. in my high school we have our fair share of bashing of badminton, but most of the people that bash it usually came and watched us play and would change their mind after a few runs around the court (or some powerful smashes). but yeah we had the noobs, the middle people and well the pros, most of the noobs were just there cause they thought it was an easy sport and they could make the team, the middle people were like recreational players that had skill and wanted to make the team, and then there were the pro players we were there to make the team and well people wouldnt actually bash the sport after watching some of us play. they would respect it a bit more but oh well they still didnt know what they were missing. Its rather funny almost the whole gr11 badminton team was made up of full IB people with the exception of the partials still some great players.

As for badminton on TV, ive seen some shows where they have badminton even if its just them holding badminton racquets or you have the gym set up meh i cant complain atleast there showing something badminton or mentioning its name.

Well i say that speedminton is probally not going to get that big...i mean all they have is maria and well thats the only good thing going for them, i could take a tennis/squah racquet and a shuttle and get the same effect...

Yeah, it's probably just a fad.

    ...Wait a minute!

Doesn't a fad have to be popular first???

I didn't even know the word 'speedminton' until I stopped by Canadian Tire and saw their little shuttles that was 3 for $10! I was like, WTF?? And I tried one outside with their "wind ring", and it just went up to my roof! (Good for "All-weather" play  )

i would say every sport has the lame side of it.. examples:

Soccer - 22 men /women chasing after a stupid ball with 3 people judging whether they have done it the legal way..

Basketball - 1 person bouncing a ball with 5 others trying to snatch it from him.. and the aim is to get the ball over a ring(hoop)..

Golf - A guy or lady taking a iron stick trying to get a tiny little ball into a small small hole many yards away..

This are just a few examples.. the list could go on and on..

It is all just layman type of comments.. one would never understand aspects needed of each sport in order for them to play well (not to say excel) in it.. I would suggest those who say badminton is sissy or lame to try out the sport itself.. and they will eat back their own words.. ;)

If it's so lame, then why did they borrow a part of our sport's name?

I think it's more of an alternative. Alternative because it's not made to take the place of badminton, tennis or squash. That's why it's a mix of all three. More like a recreational alternative I guess. I wouldn't go for it... but you gotta admire Maria Sharapova's photos on their webpage! Hot chick!!!
