What whas told to be an all chinese sweap, is about to be over.. yesterday Zhou Mi lost to Juliane Schenk, of Germany.. and now Xie Xingfang almost lost the first set to Larisa griga of Ukraine , maybe they can't control the wind.???
yes. Zhou Mi reason for her lost are: - jetlag - wind it seems that a lot of players are concerned about the wind in the stadium.
Read some articles, as players complained about the wind could be as bad as tornado (a left side shot could be ended up with 3-4 meters to the right), and the lightening is not that good either. Now, I am worried that if the situation getting worse (complain from more higher ranking players), the IBF will never come back to US for major event any more.
Well, for such lvl of major event, we need a big stadium. Therefore, most of the "warehouse converted" club (don't get me wrong, most of them are very nice) seems too small for that. In US, most of the stadium are build for the need of basketball, baseball, football, etc. Therefore, to get a big and nice enough stadium, and coverted it to badminton usage, it's quite hard. Also, for the current layout, west coast is definitely a much better choice to host the event, as the east coast is too expensive and lack of support.
Though the wind/movement of the shuttle is a legitimate complaint and it sucks that it's happening, it's "fair" because everyone playing at the WC has to deal with it, not just the super stars.
They already did when they 1st heard the complain. However, the wind is created due to the stadium layout (designed for hockey). Even though, they can minimize the damage, the damage was / is / still will be there. Also, with a huge crowd (will be starting quarter final), u surely don't want to sit with 2000 others with absolute no A/C on...
That was the first match for xie xingfang, i guess she was a bit nervous in the first set, remember that few years ago Xingfang was well know for not being consistent mentally, but she did well in the 2nd set and showed that this moment of her life belong to the past =p
True, it's a "fair" condition/circumstances for all players, but the thing is, a couple of players and reporters said that playing in the current condition is almost similar as in "playing outdoor". Also heard Taufik said, "it's almost as if one can fly a kite in the current condition"... Hmm, if nothing is being "fix" to improve the playing condition, might as well do the Semis and Finals outdoor in the parking lot.. It'll be a first in a WC competition..
LMAO Chris! While we're being funny, might as well take it outdoors to Santa Monica Beach and have "Beach Badminton".
ya, one calm night last week, i went out to my front yard and test my shuttles because i got a batch with several brands and 76 and 75 mixed up together.
Adaptation is the key Players just have to adapt to the different environment, I recall Malaysia players had to watchup bottles flying from the seat while playing in Jakarta, I guess wind was even stronger over there
This has been mentioned at times, but I don't think it's exactly true. Extraordinary conditions will always benefit the lesser players because it allows more factors to chance. Example: Taufik v Sato In normal conditions (or little draft), perhaps Taufik has 95% chance of winning (this is based on the ability of the players alone). Put in an extraordinary factor (freezing temperature, wet floor, wind etc.) and now there exists something that is 50-50, so maybe Taufik's chance of winning is cut down to 70% instead. A common strategy for underdogs is to try to make things more chaotic. You can't win if you play it normally so create extraordinary conditions. Let the game be decided more by the roll of the dice rather than by ability.
Z ning, LD, Kenneth J and Taufik got past their first matches quite easily, so the draft factor is quite insignificant.
i think with AC ducts layout in the hall effects the draft. so perhaps certain courts experience more significant draft disturbance than other courts
I think hcyong is right...the wind factor is something you can't control during a game...a player must hope that the wind factor goes in his/her favor...let's accept the fact that the wind is never a factor during trainings/drills...the game controllers MUST do something about this...
i wrote that in a haste to head out of the house. I think the word 'insignificant' wasnt chosen wisely. I shoulda have said the draft factor is equalized as both players are affected. This is where a multi talented (smart) player can change his tactic to make use of the given condition. I STILL dont think xxf and chen hong's close call is too related to the draft tho.
