Anyone know the new record? I saw 211 MPH on the computer at 05 WC in Anaheim but I dunno if that was broken again. Just wondering if anyone knows the speed and who smashed it.

I think it was Fu Haifeng at a tournament where the IBF were trialing some new hardware (for measuring smash speeds).

303mph is 487.6km/h (if i converted it right), which seems way too fast.

Not correct. Archer's record is at least six years old, and it's just a Guinness record -- in fact I think it's even still in the Guinness record books...

Many players have recorded higher smash speeds after that, for instance at the Swiss Open 2003 (or was it 2004?), Athens Olympics, and now at the WC in Anaheim.

It all depends on how the smash is measured. I suspect the method used recently would be different to the method used six years ago to measure Archer's smash. As such they canoot be directly compared.

I've 'measured' smash speed from video footage. My smash is only ~60mph (with plastic shuttles). When I measured Pro's smashes they were >70mph

Do you measure the shuttle speed when it is across the net already?

I count the frames from racquet to racquet and guesstimate the distance. :)

I'm pretty sure that the speed measured are the initial speeds right after contact.
The distance measured here is the average speed, the shuttle slows down drastically at the end of its flight of which i'm sure we all know. Thats why it appears much slower and the figures are lower.
