Forgive my ignorance, but why isn't Xia defending his 2003 MS WC title???

He didn't qualify, I think because his world ranking wasn't high enough...

XXZ is no longer the force we was. Until he goes to Germany.

    IBF International Representation Chart

    International Representation Chart

I may be mistaken, but since Xia is moving to Germany, the IBF representation chart probably explains why he didn't play in the WC. :) Maybe he's waiting for the 3-year grace period to end so that he can represent Germany.

I'm no expert though. I'd be very glad if someone confirmed if this is true or not. :D

    He's going to Germany????

Maybe he has this thing for Bratwurst and Steinlager :D

Anyways, I will always remember him for his mammoth effort in WC 2003 in the semi finals against Kenneth Jonassen :)

I really respect Xia and applaud him for his very expressive pride for the motherland (always the head of the cheering squad, etc). But, at age 27, he was bound to leave the CHN squad sooner or later. In fact, it's quite an accomplishment to have lasted that long on an ultra-competitve A-team. In 3 years time, I dunno how well he will perform if he does choose to rep Germany. I mean, the Chinese players are known for their relatively short playing cycles (cept for Zhang Ning!!). His best days are over but not forgotten.

Regardless of what happens from now on, he will always be considered one of the greatest of the Chinese MS of the early 21st century, on the court and off the court.

It was definately more exciting than his SF ;) but I am 100% sure it was the quarters.

Because he was the 4th Chinese player, and a country is only allowed to send maximum of 3 players in any event. He was the odd one out.

Rather remain the fourth player in China or the first player in Germany, he would do well to target being the top player in USA - three years from now or not. Still better chance of winning the WC again.
