Heard a lot about her lately about her game with Xie Xinfang and Wang Chen.

Anyone got pics or comment about her play?
some say her backhand is amazing (comparable to Taufik one in woman context) and her only weakness is her height.

The way she played against XXF in WC05 certainly looks promising. But yet to see long term whether she could keep same performance.

But one for sure is that her hairdo looks very outstanding :D

She can definitely become a top player if she cuts down on her unforced errors.
The third game she played against XXF. She lost like 4 points straight?? due to unforced errors. But maybe you can attribute that to her young age. We'll definitely see more of her in the future.

But she lacks of height. She may not be able to last that long. Coz running all over the court will tire her.

she seems to do OK even against Xie. i noticed that her overhead stroke is unique in the way that her contact point is quite far behind, probably done to compensate for the lack of coverage.

also, i am not totally convince that height is that much of a factor. Gong Zhichao at her prime was a quite invincible player.

we will have to see if Cheng will be able to battle the Chinese lady. now that Cheng is in their radar, she may find that it will get more and more difficult to play against them.

IMHO, she should be a role model to all of us, especially current young players who aspire to be top-class one day, as to just how far playing simple badminton can take us. She didn't do anything fancy at all save from occasional cross court backhand net shots---that is, if you want to call them fancy at all---and she very nearly caused the upset of the tournament in WC'05.

If I have to pick on her game, I'd say her main weakness is her speed. XXF was in deep trouble until she got a handle of the draft in the arena and upped the tempo of the match.

I agree with everyone here that she's certainly got an excellent potential to be a future champion.

P.S.: I too think she should get her money back from her hairdresser. :D

Very well said, can't agree more than that.

Plus, GZC was from CHN, which has a huge pool of prospects. Cheng is from TW, which means the "internal selection" should be far less competitive.

She looks very old. I also think a haircut is definitely in order.

For me height is definately a factor. IMO they may be able to play for few years. Taller players last longer in the Women's division.

It depends on the play style and the physical conditions. Height might be a factor, might be not. How long did Susi Susanti play competitively before retiring in '99? I believe she began dominating WS since early '90's; therefore, my humble guess would be 10-12 years.

For Chinese female WS players, most of them are tall; but so far I only see Zhang Ning is still participating in the international competition at the age of 30. Others (around the same age as ZN) are just fading out. The domestic competition is strong and therefore not that many of them had a long career.

Well, let us see if she could be the one shaking the great wall of China.

I agree with you...with the exception of GZC and we can include Susi from INA too, CHN players are tall and an advantage, the shorter ones got bypassed in the selection process. As for WC05, I was there watching the match between Cheng and XXF, XXF made her run all over the court. Even though XXF stamina is not the norm of the CHN WS players, with XXF long legs all she needs is 2 steps and she practically cover the court while Cheng has to run desperately tiring her out.

Cheng Shiao Chieh might lack the height, but she certainly has the spirit and determination to win the title. Congratulation for defending her title in Taipei.

    Off Topic:

I believe being shorter, helps you to move around the court more efficiently. Sure, you run further(although the court space-distance remain the same for tall&short players) because of shorter legs but you need less momentum change(good for your knees and ankles) and energy to carry yourself around. Much like a efficient engine(for small people) versus a high output(for tall people) but less efficient engine.

Who will last longer? Is difficult to tell, but from what I see, exceptional badminton players seldom tower over 6 ft. except maybe BCL/ZJH. LD, I believe, is the shortest among the MS players in China. Does BCL/Chen Long has a better footwork/recovery rate than LD? I don't think so.

..CSC has the potential but just needs to be consistent from here on out; she's not getting any younger either..add to that, i don't know if her injury (ies) will go away for good or not..

As for short/tall people running around the court more/less efficiently. Zhang Ning, XXF were quite tall, at least close to 6'0 (180+ cm) and we know how long ZN played until..LD is quite tall, too, for an Asian person (5'9, almost 180 cm). There are also Morten Frost, Peter Gade..Chen Hong was quite tall, maybe a bit taller than LD..

Overall, shorter players will have to rely more on better footwork to cover the court and hence, they seem to have a bit better footwork than taller players..

Err, when CHN elite WS compete, how far did the Jap cuties gone? Being short does not mean there is no hope. Gong Zhi Chao is 5'1" and Susi is not tall, but both are legends and giant killers and both prove that vertically challenged players can win. But short in badminton really is a disadvantage in GENERAL, just a tap at the net is tough for short players than for a ZN or XXF...playing against XXF, she just make the short player run all over the court...case in point the semi-final of WS in WC05, I was there and Cheng has no chance. XXF is notorious for poor fitness and running out of breathe but she still reigned champion in WCs and harvest a string of gold in majors, blessed with skill and darn tall and a long reach. Short players need tremendous fitness e.g. Susi and Gong, constant running and exellent anticipation to make up for being short. If you play against short person you will know their handicap...run baby run!! and run faster!! LOL!:D:p
If short and tall players both have the same potential, skill, etc., how come CHN pick only the tall ones for their no. 1 team...unless the short one like Gong ZC is a rare exception;)
