I hope this thread isn't in existence yet (searched but found nothing on it) *gives Kwun a sheepish look*

Let's face it, when the shuttles hit the net or goes out, or where an opponent returns a poor floating shot nice and high right in front of the net and you smash it into the net, you probably want to scream in frustration or anger. We all know that anger and frustration will only affect our games negatively. So question is, what are some of the things you do to manage your anger/frustration on court so you can remain focus and positive with your game?

While I don't believe in swearing my head off, hit the net (or the umpire for that matter) or abuse my racquet when frustrated by my play, I also believe that you need to let that anger out so you can 'move on' and let that frustration go. Obvious my method of 'letting off steam' varies in intensity pending on how annoyed I am with myself or with the circumstance (bad line call etc). If it's something small like making unforced errors, I often just take a deep breath and mutter "come on!" ala Leyton Hewitt to myself. If it's something bigger, like hitting the white tape of the net and shuttle not rolling over for like the 50th time in the game, then I sometimes let out an anguish scream, ala Maria Sharapova (but at lower decibles :p).

The main thing for me is not to 'hold a grudge' against that event that annoyed me. So after I let the steam out, I basically tell myself to forget that point and concentrate on the next one, that helps me.

    What do you guys do?

What? You mean you don't take the racquet and bring it down hard across the thigh? Or even do a John McEnroe???

    :D :D

Different folks do it differently and depending on the nature of the games. Fun games, who cares, right? Laugh and forget about it.

Serious games, hmm, most likely take a deep breath. If getting killed 15-0 or something, probably, slink away and hide in embrassement ;)

Bwahahahahahhaahahhahaha ... :D That's what brothers are for!

Anger mgmt? I just scream in anguish, then start laughing, but only if the opponents are friends.

Slap myself and mumble some gibberish to me-self. Reprimand my racket face-to-face for misbehaving, misconduct that led to the mis-hit or unforce error. Shadow-bashing my racket on the floor...else will go bonker and insane!

I just realise that i do not do anything. I too reckon that we should let it out ala Leyton Hewitt or Maria Sharapova.

    Any good suggestion?

in doubles i'll just put on that reluctant smile on my face, hand up to apologise to my partner, then get on with the game as normal.

fact is, there is nothing you can do except to keep your cool, the more you feel frustrated, the more mistakes you keep making.

you have to control your temper not only when you make a mistake, also when your partner makes mistake, esp after a long hard rally, you have to forgive him or her and get on. just say "don't worry" to your partner.

In singles i just go 'ah shhhhhhhhhhh-ocking' 'jeez'
    My mate 'ffffff-lump'
In doubles my mistake 'soz man (to partner male or female)'
In doubles their mistake 'unlucky man (male or female)'

*edit* All that just cools me down, i get over it then carry on the game.
I don't really get really OTT on anger when i play, but if my opponent is being highly annoying. Commiting obvious fowls and being allowed to cos his mate is the umpire (in school) then i get annoyed and constantly smash at him, or the umpire.
    muhahahahaa

With occational mistake/error I'll just shout "come on". With repeated mistakes I actually have quite a painful habit: I hit my right calf with my racquet. It is cheaper than my old habit - hitting the floor with the racquet :D . Also the slight pain makes me forget about the mistake.

Hey i do the exact same thing too!! I'm known by fellow club members to be pretty loud in the court when i play :D. As for the topic of anger management...badminton IS my anger management for all the stress and frustration i have during the rest of the day (work and relatioships):). I am loud on the court 'cause it's the only place i can vent my frustrations out.

But if someone (like my opponent) tells me to tone down then I will respect his/her request.

i just say "seriously.." in a disgraced tone if i do silly unforced errors
if it's just normal unforced error i just shut up and try to do better
    if it's my partner i just say "it's ok/cool/fine"

    :D happy games

I've only put the shuttle into the net twice at point blank range...so far. :p *knocks on wood*

However, my doubles partner and another guy, "Junior" as I'll call him, consistently put shuttles into the net at point blank range. Soooo, I'm used to it. I just laugh it off and say, "Danggit Junior!" in a funny/sarcastic tone. :D :)

JumpALot knows exactly what I'm referring to because he knows and plays with the two as well. :p

Usually I'll just softly hit my foot with my racquet... not in a violent manner. The worst I'll do is say "s**t" or something similar. Yeah I rarely let my anger get to me, and rarely do I get angry i Badminton. My doubles partner on the other hand is the complete opposite. He shouts out loud when things aren't going his way, starts to look sulky... etc. it's rather embarrassing really. And it sure doesn't help us do any better. In fact it seems as soon as he gets in one of these moods, he starts to play a whole lot worse making many mistakes. Oh well, I'll just have to hope he grows out of it :(. Or at least tones it down and controls is a little better.

This girl on my team seriously needs anger management. If you play mix with her do all you can to calm her and MAKE AS LITTLE MISTAKE AS POSSIBLE. Also if u accidently hit her with the birdie or racket you should run and hide in the boy's bathroom :)

This thread just came on time.

I guess i'm a normal person. But i really didn't think i would one day smash my racket on the floor due to frustration. Talking about it.. it was not even a tournament. It happened today. Just a friendly game with my close friends over a can of Gatorade. Well we didnt lose the bet but i definately lost my At700. Oh well i hope i will not repeat this anymore. Attached is how the racket looked like. Guess what i just had it strung today. Enjoy it guys.. this serve a lesson to all. Don't try this at any court.

wow...just when I was thinking to change my old MP77 to AT700...I used to throw my old crappy rackets on the floor around and barely a scratch...or did you really fully smack it into the ground!?

..btw do you think it may be compoudned because you just had it restrung? ie maybe high tension of string help to cause the damage..?
