    Hello

I've been playing badminton just for a little while now and there seems to be 1 thing still bugging me.

Lets say I hit a great shot toward the opponent and he returns a somewhat bad shot floating over the net, capable of for me to smash with ease.

The problem is, I normally crush that type of shot into the net or out on the opponent's base line.

    Some tips would be great.

    Thankyou.

i know you want to whack the shttlecock as hard as you can as you believe its a sure winner but 9/10 it will go out or hit the net.
You dont really want to hit it hard as it may float in the air landing out or it will go too low and hit the net.
A simple medium strength tap downwards, not too steep will do you good.

Shots at the net require a different technique from rearcourt shots.

At the net, you don't need power; you need control. To finish the rally in this situation, you need only to tap the shuttle sharply downwards. Use a very small motion; use your fingers or wrist, not a big arm swing.

You will find that the smaller your shot motion, the steeper the trajectory of the shuttle, and the less likely you are to make a mistake.

These shots are called "net kills". There's more about them on the forums -- search and you will find :)

lol this happened to me too when i first started, but not as bad. Just try not to get too excited, and since your closer to the net, just whack it or half smash it (using only your wrist and finger power) your opposition will have a smaller amount of time to react so power isnt really required at the net. trust me, 95% of the time you sharply tap the bird downwards at the net, your opponent wont be able to get it.

haha.. looks like i got the 5% during one of my weekend games.. i returned 2 of this smashes of my oponent but was killed at the third (sad).. one of my finest moments in defending.. haha..

back to the topic.. hold the near the cone to get more control of the shuttle.. and use more of your wrist to get the shuttle down at an steeper angle.. that''s what I'm doing though.. and btw... keep your nerves during this kinda of moments.. it is easy to get excited and have your shot smashed into the net instead...;)

Are you getting to the shuttle in time? Sounds like you're getting to it late and/or floating the return.

yea you should just take out most ur power and smash it lightly, try and aim it to the sides. even if ur opponent manages to get it, it shouldnt be a very high quality shot and u can just attack again. high quality shots probably only occur if they got lucky, or if they're godlike.:)

normaly I just jump up as high as possible and smash down really hard. I saw a lot of people who just stand and whack as hard as they can but all of it usually hit the net or out.So my only tip is jump.

    watch your knees... :)

But seriously, the best thing to do is to take your time and not get too excited. Level head >> ultra-uber-hulk-smash.

That, and level heads tend to hit it in.

    like they said:

    - use your wrist
    - don't make a full arm swing
    - don't try and hit a line, just make sure it's inside, and not onto your opponent racket.
    - make a short tap, not your hardest
    - don't be too eager
    - if you still hit it too hard, try and make a little wiping action. start a lettle swing from your left shoulder, to your right shoulder.
