JAKARTA: Malaysian shuttler Wong Mew Choo (pic) gained a huge dose of confidence ahead of her defence of the SEA Games women's singles title in the Indonesian Open at the Istora Senayan here yesterday.

The 22-year-old Mew Choo eliminated reigning Commonwealth Games champion and sixth seeded Li Li of Singapore in the first round. She won 11-9, 3-11, 11-3 to set up a second-round match against Indonesian Adrianti Firdasari.

Mew Choo had found difficulty to rediscover her form since making a comeback in January after a seven-month layoff because of injury.

And the upset win over Li Li in the six-star tournament has certainly lifted Mew Choo's spirits ahead of the SEA Games (Nov 27-Dec 5). The top ranked Singaporean at number 14th in the world is seen as one of the favourites for the gold in Manila.

In the last Games in Vietnam in 2003, Mew Choo beat Li Li in the semi-finals en route to becoming the first Malaysian in 26 years to win the women's singles gold medal.

While Mew Choo had to go the distance to stay in the competition, the Malaysian men's singles players had it relatively much easier in their first-round matches yesterday.

Second seeded Lee Chong Wei began his campaign with a 15-1, 15-0 win over France's Michael Delile.

Former Malaysian number one Wong Choong Hann cruised into the second round with a 15-10, 15-6 win over Jung hoon-min of South Korea.

Fifth seeded Kuan Beng Hong chalked up an easy 15-3, 15-4 win over Sakti Kusuma of Indonesia. Yeoh Kay Bin, James Chua and K. Yogendran also downed Indonesian opponents.

Kay Bin scored a come-from-behind 9-15, 15-10, 15-8 win over Adnan Fauzi while James defeated Andre Kurniawan 15-5, 15-5. K. Yogendran also booked his place in the second round with a 15-12, 15-3 win over Jeffer Rosobin.

Lee Tsuen Seng failed in his bid to revive his fledgling career when he crashed out 13-15, 8-15 to Indonesian-born Wimpie Mahardi of Singapore.

Injury forced 13th seed Roslin Hashim to concede a walkover to Japan's Kozai Kazuteru while Pei Wei Chung was beaten 9-15, 6-15 to Stenny Kusuma of Indonesia.
