(Beijing, June 30, 2005) Smooth progress has been made in the construction projects for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in line with the principle of focusing on “safety, quality, construction time, function and cost”, and builders are working hard at the construction sites. On-site safety, supervision and auditing of the construction projects have also been ensured.

The news was announced today at a press conference held in the Beijing Olympic Media Centre by officials from the Beijing “2008” Project Construction Headquarters Office, which oversees the construction of all the venues and other facilities for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Since the second half of 2004, Beijing Municipality had fine-tuned and optimized the layout of the Olympic venues and some design schemes for the venues, taking into consideration the following factors: 1. To ensure that such optimization and fine-tuning would meet the needs of the Olympic Games; 2. The after-Games use of these venues -- they are planned to serve Beijing citizens for their fitness, entertainment and leisure in the long run; 3. To make full use of the existing facilities, and 4. To use as many temporary venues as possible instead of building permanent ones so that they will not be set aside after the Games. These measures have gained supports from both the International Olympic Committee and the International Federations.

After the optimization, a retractable roof on the National Stadium is omitted, the opening at the top is enlarged, and the number of seats is reduced from 100,000 to 91,000. The redesign will consume 12,000 tons less of steel and 9,000 square metres less of membranes. In the Wukesong Indoor Stadium, the commercial facilities atop the basketball hall is left out, reducing the construction space from 119,000 square metres to 63,000 square metres, and reducing the use of steel from the original 40,000 tons to just 5,000 tons.

A total of 31 competition venues will be used for the 26 Olympic sports that will be held in Beijing, with location of equestrian events to be finalized.

Of the 31 competition venues, 11 are new ones, 11 are existing venues which need renovating or expanding, nine are temporary venues. Forty-one training venues and five facilities which are directly related to the Olympic Games will be needed. To ensure an easy access to the venues, 59 roads and three bridges will be built or renovated. In addition, the environment around the venues and roads will also be improved.

Construction will begin in 2005 for 14 venues, including eight new competition venues, two renovated venues and five temporary venues. Some venues will have to be finished by the end of 2006 to hold international competitions, and by the end of 2007, all other venues and related facilities will be finished to hold test events.

Construction of eight new venues is in full swing in Beijing. They are the National Stadium (国家体育场), the National Aquatics Centre (国家游泳中心), the Beijing Shooting Range Hall (北京射击馆), the Laoshan Velodrome (老山自行车馆), the Wukesong Indoor Stadium (五棵松体育馆), the National Indoor Stadium (国家体育馆), the China Agriculture University Gymnasium (中国农业大学体育馆) and the Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium (北京工业大学体育馆). The rest three will be launched in the third quarter of 2005.

Locations for the 41 training venues have been decided and construction for the new ones will begin in 2006 and be completed by the first quarter of 2008.

Four of the five related Olympic facilities, namely the National Convention Centre (国家会议中心), the Digital Beijing Building (数字北京大厦), the Olympic Village (奥运村) and the Olympic Park (奥林匹克森林公园), have seen their foundation stones laid. Construction of the last one, the Media Village (媒体村), will be launched within the year. Six roads have been finished and four are under construction.

Plans for infrastructure construction and environment improvement will be carried out in the coming three years, and will be finished by the end of 2007.
