Hey just wondering if anyone has experienced a weird bump on the inner underside of the wrist right before the actually joint. I think its come as a result of my more intense training program. I think its called a syst or something but it doesn't seem to be affecting my wrist flexibility or anything.. its just a hard bump that hurts if I press really hard on. Its maybe only prodruding 1/2 cm from the place. Anyone have any ideas on what it is exactly?

I'm thinking maybe I hit my wrist against something really hard but don't seem to remember...

How long have you had it? Best to see your doctor if it doesn't go away in a week or so.

Yep, rather than speculation, go see a doctor and get some facts and options.

    Good luck. :)

    Hi Eurasian,

That's called a ganglion. I had one a year ago. The doctor who diagnosed it said it is typically caused by trauma. It is a little pocket of fluid that gets trapped in the tendon.

To get rid of it, wear a wrist support while playing. Make sure it is tight. You will feel funny with your shots for a while. My ganglion went away after about two to three months.

I was Diagnosed as having one of these ganglions as well. Mine still hasn't gone after 18months. Painful to play with too. Doctor has informed me I can have it drained.

I was informed of that option as well. There are two ways that can be done: (i) using a needle and syringe to draw the fluid out; and (ii) minor surgery.

I am told, however, that there is a rather high chance of the ganglion recurring, even after surgery, which leaves an ugly scar.

I would recommend just compressive treatment. If that fails, you can seek out traditional chinese remedies (using a piece of bull horn to scrape the area around the ganglion, for example).

i rested my wrist (no badminton) on the weekend and the bump is much much smaller. I'm guessing there will be no bump soon enough.

I have one but it is located at my elbow. Doctor said that it will not affect my badminton. Then again, we speculate that it may be a ganglion but i guess it's best if you see a doctor.

Wow, that's weird, must be fluid and/or inflammation related. Regardless, hope you make a complete recovery. :D

Ok dont laugh, I got rid of mine.. I saw it 3 days ago all of a sudden it popped up.. I read this ganglion cyst can be fixed by smacking it with a heavy book like a dictionary to POP the gel filled cysts, I even saw on youtube someone having theirs popped UGH nasty.. but since mine was on inner wrists there are just too many nerves and veins and thin skin so I just did the next best thing, I kept a TIGHT wrist wrap on it for several hours I kept pushed it with my thumb all day when I thought about it, so took of the wrap to let my wrist get some air and pressed the ganglion one more time really hard, I felt something slip or pop and IT WAS GONE!??? OMG so happy.. so I am going to keep rubbing it to make sure it wont fill back up like they say they can.. with a needle poke, mine I hope burst! Google ganglion and hitting it with a bible, thats what I first read, then read the thumb things too, they happen on top of the wrist or inner, mines inner.. but I DONT HAVE IT NOW just got rid of it couldnt want to tell someone.. good luck all

You did? Wow! I would not have dared to simply push it somewhere. I wonder if the liquid inside - or whatever it is - can actually affect your blood circulation in a bad way?

Old thread revived. Oh well, there will always be ganglion cysts. Good to hear a happy outcome. :)

It is funny to see how in 2005, when the thread was started, posters were giving advice based on their own experiences. Now, instead of talking to doctors, family members, or even Google, people can simply refer to youtube. What a garden of delight youtube is: music videos, movie previews, endless varieties of idiots being hit in the crotch, ... and now self-administered medicine.

Very happy that the pressure technique worked for widingdown. It's mostly safe but not generally recommended by medical authorities. The risks (to answer jesspoint's question) are that you could injure nearby vessels or nerves, or that the broken cyst can become inflamed or even infected. That would be a real problem if the cyst is connected to a joint in the wrist because inflammation in a wrist joint can become chronic. These aren't terribly likely outcomes, but people should know the risks.

There is no fear of 'toxic' cyst contents despoiling the blood.

One final point for those who think they have the same thing and want to treat themselves: Make sure of the diagnosis. Get a medico to take a look before you go vigourously poking and whacking at every bump you see on your body.:) Happy badmintoning!
