Choong-Lee pull off great upset, Simon stuns Taufik
TheStar Sept 23 '05
JAKARTA: Malaysia’s seasoned campaigners Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah pulled of a great upset when they beat second seeds Luluk Hadiyanto-Alven Yulianto of Indonesia to reach the quarter-finals of the US$250,000 Indonesian Open at Istora Senayan yesterday on a day that also saw world singles champion Taufik Hidayat being shown the exit.
Tan Fook-Wan Wah carved out a sensational 15-5, 7-15, 15-12 win over the world number three pair to make up for their second round defeat to the Indonesians in the Malaysian Open just three months ago.
The pair will now take on teammates Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat in the last eight.
Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Lin Woon Fui also marched into the last eight after beating Hendra A. Gunawan-Joko Riyadi of Indonesia to set up a meeting with top seeds and favourites Candra Wijaya-Sigit Budiarto.
Three Malaysian men’s singles shuttlers – Lee Chong Wei, Wong Choong Hann and Yeoh Kay Bin – also reached the quarter-finals
The 22-year-old Chong Wei toppled Indonesian-born Wiempie Mahardi of Singapore 15-13, 15-8 to set up a match with South Korean Lee Hyun-il.
Choong Hann breezed into the last eight with a convincing 15-9, 15-4 win over South Korean Ahn Hyun-suk while Kay Bin disposed of Singaporean Kendrick Lee 15-4, 15-4.
But the biggest surprise came when Indonesian youngster Simon Santoso eliminated Olympic and world champion Taufik in the third round with a 15-12, 15-5 win, dashing Taufik’s dream of equalling Ardy Wiranata’s record of six Indonesian Open titles.
A day after eliminating Singaporean Li Li, Wong Mew Choo knocked out Indonesia’s second ranked wome’s singles shuttler Adriyanti Firdasari 6-11, 11-1, 11-4 to set up a meeting with Japanese Eriko Hirose.
Malaysia will also have a representative in the mixed doubles - Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty - and women’s doubles - Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui - in today’s quarter-finals respectively.
