Hunan was the champion for the women's team event in 2001. Facing a series of problems including lack of young talents, it is almost impossible to renew its glory. Chen Jin, Jiangsu's ace in the men's singles, was fielded as the first singles again to play Guangdong's Wu Yunyong in the first round. Wu, Chen's teammate in the national badminton team and ranked 118th in the world, was not his counterpart's match for both skill and speed, losing quickly 15-6,15-2 in only 35 minutes. Chen, 26-ranked in the world, much younger but given more chances to participate in the international events than Wu for the nation, due to the nation's new-star making policy, built the initial lead for the host's defending prospects.
