after losing the match in the semi-final round. wang chen had finally waived her match against zhu ling at first set.
she met the press shortly afterwards and claimed that those umpires had a bias against her. she just can't play the game any longer and will never participate in the chinese national championships again in the future.
imo. "biased umpires" is one thing. anyway, she should take the pain, finish the game and show them/us the true sportsmanship!

however, this move has more impact on the media and hopefully creates more attention on the biased judging.

in the semi-final round wang chen had played against jiang yanjiao. she claimed the umpire had a couples of misjudging. those baised judgment annoyed her and eventually made her lost the match.
she couldn't sleep well after that match and didn't really wanna play in the next round. her coach told her to play it anyway and she did. but just after a few points, she decided to abandon the match because "she suffered from injuries" in the previous games. she left the game shortly after checked by the medical officals on court.
after that, she talked to the press "those people" won't let her take the medal anyway and indeed, she had suffered from injuries during games said wang. and form now on. she will never participate in any games in china including the chinese national championships!

As Shiryu, i applause her courage, i understand why she did it, unfortunately i don't think china considers hong kong like a real "province" .. or maybe they never forgave wang chen leaving to HK .. that's really sad for wang chen and also sad for china !! because they always didn't understand what is "sport" =/
Even if i'm one of the biggest fan of china team i don't accept when they sheat in order to win ..

I'd say Wang Chen had a great chance to prove to herself and her peers, that she is as good as the Chinese national first teamers (namely the 4 'flowers'; Gong RN, Zhang N, Zhou Mi, Xie XF), aswell as the now legendary Gong ZC.

The reason she left to Hong Kong, was because she was relegated to 2nd stringer status.

I think she is still very bitter about the whole experience, and is childish to declare self exemption from future competitions in China.

I don't know her at all, but have only watched her play. I can only comment that she is not the nicest person on the court, her sportsmanship leaves a lot to be desired, she has an air of confidence about her, sometimes bordering on the arrogant side (but not necessarily superiority) just a little bit much negative vibe for me.

I can see why she would have 'enemies' over the border, but to say, "they would never let me win here*", she burnt any remaining bridges in my opinion. She makes it out into a conspiracy.

(*words to the effect)

As for the match against Jiang YJ, being a pro for so long, she should know how to cope when things are not on your side, but she let it affect not only her game, but also her mind.

No doubt she is a good enough player, but for the reasons above, she never has or will achieve the heights of Zhang Ning, Gong Zhi Chao, Gong Ruina or even Xie Xing Fang.

Oh well, as one grass fades, a new flower blooms in Jiang YanJiao.

I think this is ridiculous. Wang Chen behaved like a child and not a pro badminton player. If she had ingnored these petty misjudgments she might have won the match.

HK's media widely report this incident. I am really amazing to see wang chen being so angry & losing her temper in front of the media.

LYB said he doesn't think there is any unfair happened & he think players shouldn't blame others after losing the match.

we won't know the truth because there is no livecast of this semifinal.

I can't deny that there are many "dark side" in china, however i think sportsmanship is very important to such a big country. 2008 olypmics will be held in beijing, i can't imagine the impact if such "unfair" happened again towards those former chinese players such as Pi hongyan or Yao jie.

actually such problem is more serious in table-tennis, all major hk team players come from china. in sept's asian championships, HK won 2 golds(women's team and women's single). China's media thinks itz "world end", they can't accept china team lost to HK. the coach of women's team almost be fried & one of the top player being sent back to province team!

i dunno what will happen if chinese badminton players lost some major title to "oversea army"(former chinese players represent other countries now)..

though i am super fans of china team, i really agree Syaoran_Style that china people didn't understand what SPORTS is...

Well, that's true that a player like Wang chen, should have a lot of experienced .. but when you really want something, when it's your first goal and also your dream, and you don't know why but everything ( and everybody) is against you .. how could you deal with it ? you just can't support it .. =/ I saw many times wang chen playing, i never saw any kind of arogance atitude or something like that ... If wang chen was so angry and sad, it means that she must have a good reason ... Poor Wang Chen she doesn't deserve that =/

Maybe the pain was too much to take this time. I don't think it's really a big deal dropping the National Games.

There are wide negative coverage about the judges and coaches in various events in the 10th National Games. You know.

Even the pro-Communist newspaper Ta Kung Po raised the issue:

We would never see the game. This semi was moved to a reserve court just before the match. No livecast, even no camera to record anything (no video recording at all for this semi, odd). The live broadcast was swtiching from the semi to position 5 to 8 playoff. No wonder, Wang Chen was upset since this was well calculated.

I thought if Wang Chen won the 10th national game, the embrassment was way larger than if she beats some Chinese players during IBF open finals. There was uneasiness between Wang Chen and LYB when Wang Chen left China to HK.

LYB admit he did not watch the game. So how did he make comments on fairness of judge. He used "think" in all his comments. What a waste.

Wang Chen was unseeded from beginning. So she met XXF in 2nd round. LYB believed XXF had most of chances to beat Wang Chen without any help from judges. And I do not think they can move final to a reserve court and do not do live broadcasting. So the only chance was to get rid of Wang Chen in semi by all means.

This was a very small incident in China 10th national game. Other sports had much worse incidents. So there was not much press coverage on this.

Now put yourself in her shoes for 1 minute. No one really knew what hapenned but something must have gone very wrong.

I think saying '' She should know how to cope when things are not on your side'' without knowing what really happenned is a non-sense.

It's easy to say x player is childish just because she quit in the middle of the game, but if it was me, i would rather leave in the middle of the game then letting cheaters win over me.

If she thinks what China did to her is bad then she should fight for her cause. I Wonder what you would do if it was you.

i don't think players there were cheaters. may be lyb is the only cheater behind all this! may be those umpires and the chinese national championship officials as well! god knows!
one thing i m quite sure. those badminton players had nothing to do with the baised judgment!
