    hello BCers

On the back of any bag of Yonex strings you have the pentagon saying, power, repulsion etc.

I was wondering what the difference between power and repulsion was. can someone explain it to me in depth?

    thanks in advance

I think it is the same thing, only the words are different : power or repulsion.

I'll try my explanation BUT it may not be correct...

Repulsion: The speed at which the shuttle leaves the strings after being hit by them

Power: The speed or strength of the flight after the shuttle has been hit..this applies normally in mid-flgiht..

Come to think of it, these 2 definitions sound alike...lol:p

On my fake BG-65 from China, it says "Power Repulsion". ;)

Seriously, like Eepak said, I believe the two words are supposed to mean the same thing.

    thread revive:

should high repuslion then give a bouncing feel to teh stringbed, or does it feel hard like a board of wood?

should low repulsion mean the shuttle just drops dead and loses spead when contacting the stringbed?

Both will give you bounce but assuming the same string tension:

...higher repulsion will give you more bounce. It'll be more crisp and just jump off your racket.

...lower repulsion will give you less bounce. It'll feel more dead. When you hit the shuttle, it just won't go anywhere (relatively) speaking.

    aha

    so repulsionwise bg85>bg80 ?

btw, perosnalQ: why do you prefer bg80 (i know you do/did) over bg85?

Yes, BG-85 is a bit more repulsive and has more feel, as well as control than BG-80; at least IMHO. I use BG-80 because I break BG-85 way too fast and I don't want to restring my rackets every few days.

I'm currently trying Tactic and Ashaway string, looking for similar performance but more durability. The Tactic string looks very promising so far.

But still, for OK durability (relatively speaking) and very good performance, the best string I've tried so far is Yonex BG-80.

Another reason using BG80 is because BG85 lose tension too fast. For a high repulsion string, BG80 holds its tension very well.

If you are a hard hitter, above will be a good aspect concerned.

I didn't have a problem with BG-85 losing tension. But then again, it never lasted me more than 10-14 days so maybe that's why. :p

I'd be really happy if 85 can last me for 14 days. It used be able to do that, until I mixed in a lot of slices in my game... :(

smashing make steh strings extend, sometimes to their bracking point.
slicing make the string abbrate more, causing friction, to break (*cut*) teh strings

Actually straight on smashing (without mishits) is no problem for normal strings. Slicing or cutting the shuttle hard is the worst on strings and will minimize the life; well, next to mishits. :p

    BG68Ti @ 24lbs.

I can break that string in 4 sessions of 3 hours without smashing much(I smashed much less, because I knew the durability is low, but I liked the feel of the string). And I don't slice either. What happens is that the the string inside the frame starts getting thin and then it breaks right there. Maybe I hit too hard when I clear :p

    Back to BG65Ti for me.

Well, I am sure my problem is slicing teams up with mis-hits. So, say goodbye to BG85. :D

hów does a mishit mess up your strings?

when do you call a hit a mis-hit?

When you mishit, you are not hitting the shuttle at the center (sweetspot) of the racket. More specifically, when you mishit near the top of the racket, the string has little give.
