BADMINTON: Disabled team are world champs
MALAYSIA were crowned overall champions in the inaugural International Badminton Association for the Disabled (IBDA) World Badminton Championships in Taiwan with four gold, two silver and three bronze medals.
An elated head coach Moe Chin Keat, who arrived with the rest of the team at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday, said the team could have easily won another two gold medals.
However, due to a tight competition format, Chin Keat said the Malaysians' hopes of a better haul were dashed.
"We are very happy to have won the overall title given the limited time we had for training. But I firmly believe we could have won two more gold medals," said Chin Keat.
"However, the format of play was tight which required the players to play up to seven matches a day.
"And since several of our players were fasting, this affected their play. But we can come back stronger for the next edition in 2007."
Hong Kong and Taiwan finished second and third respectively.
Cheah Liek Hou was the toast of the national side as he helped himself to the men's singles gold, men's doubles gold (with Razali Jaafar in the Class two Hand category) and the men's team gold.
The team comprised Liek Hou, Razali, Hamizan Mohamed, Suhaili Laiman, Hairul Fozi and Bakri Omar.
The other gold medal came from the men's doubles pair of Jasmi Tegol and Mohd Radhi Johari in the Class Two Leg category.
The categories were divided according to the severity of the handicap.
Mazlan Saibon (men's singles Class 3 Wheelchair category) and the doubles pair of Hairul Fozi-Bakri Omar (Class 2 Leg category) won the silver medals.
Hamizan Mohamed-Theraviasamy (men's doubles Hand category), Jasmi Tegol (men's singles Class 2 Leg category) and Ahmad Fuad Abdul Rahman-Suhaili Laiman (men's doubles Class 3 Leg category) delivered the bronze medals.
