HONG KONG: National shuttler Lee Chong Wei ended compatriot Wong Choong Hann's gallant run in the US$250,000 Hong Kong Open to reach the men's singles semi-finals at the Elizabeth Stadium here yesterday.

The 23-year-old Chong Wei took just 38 minutes to dispose off Choong Hann 15-4, 15-1 in the quarter-finals.

Choong Hann had made it to the last eight after exacting sweet revenge over Olympic and World champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia with a 7-15, 15-9, 15-12 win in the third round of the six-star tournament on Thursday.

But just a day after achieving his biggest career win this year, Choong Hann, who had lost to Taufik in last year's Athens Olympic Games, ran out of steam against Chong Wei.

With yesterday's victory, Chong Wei extended his winning streak against Choong Hann in the local or international tournaments to two years.

Today, Chong Wei, who is currently ranked third in the world, will take on world number one shuttler Lin Dan of China.

Unlike his opponent, Lin Dan had to dig deep into his reserve to book his semi-finals ticket yesterday.

He was stretched to the limit by Danish star Peter Gade-Christensen before prevailing with a 17-16, 13-15, 15-12 win in another quarter-final match.

Chong Wei, who is eyeing his third international title this year, will certainly be out to get the better of Lin Dan for the second time.

Chong Wei, the reigning Malaysian and Danish Open champion, had beaten Lin Dan for the first time in the final of the Malaysian Open in July.

The other Malaysians in the singles fray – Kuan Beng Hong, Yeoh Kay Bin and Lee Tsuen Seng – all went out in the third round.

In the men's doubles, the challenge of all three Malaysian men pairs – Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat, Gan Teik Chai-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Chew Choon Eng-Khoo Chung Chiat – also came to an end.

Malaysia were banking on reigning Danish Open champions Chong Ming-Kien Keat to carry the nation's hopes but they were eliminated 15-7, 15-11, 5-15 by the aggressive Chinese pair of Guo Zhengdong-Xie Zhongbo in the second round.

Choon Eng-Chung Chiat were also knocked out in the second round but Teik Chai-Zakry went one step further, thanks to a walkover by former world champions Jonas Rasmussen-Lars Paaske.

In the quarter-finals yesterday, they were beaten 5-15, 6-15 by fourth seed Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun of China.

It was also the end of road for Malaysia in the women's singles and mixed doubles events.
