GUANGZHOU (China): National shuttler Kuan Beng Hong’s passage to the quarter-finals of the US$250,000 China Open badminton championships is easier now following the last-minute withdrawal of Olympic and world champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia.

Taufik, who was beaten by Wong Choong Hann in the third round of the Hong Kong Open last week, was forced to pull out due to an injury. He was expected to meet Beng Hong in the third round.

Yesterday, the 22-year-old Beng Hong started his campaign in the five-star tournament with a convincing 15-3, 15-0 win over Ronald Sou of the United States in the opening round.

Beng Hong, the world number 13, will take on unheralded Qiu Yanbo of China in the second round.

BENG HONG: He will take on Qiu Yanbo of China in the second round.
Without any top names in his half of the draw, Beng Hong has a good chance to reach his third quarter-finals this year. He was a quarter-finalist at the Swiss Open and China Masters.

Said national coach Misbun Sidek in Kuala Lumpur: “Beng Hong has improved but he is still finding it difficult to move up to another level.

“He needs a breakthrough in an international tournament. Hopefully, he will put up a good performance in the China Open.”

Like Beng Hong, it was also a breeze for the other Malaysian men’s singles players on the opening day here.

Choong Hann, the former national number one, blew away China’s Lu Qicheng 15-4, 15-2 to set up a meeting with Russian Stanislav Pukhov in the second round.

James Chua was stretched by Li Yu of China before winning 15-12, 7-15, 15-11. James’ next opponent is second seed Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark.

In another first round match yesterday, Pei Wei Chung defeated Trinidad and Tobago’s Justin Siu 15-1, 15-0.

The first round of the other events – men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles – will start today.
