SEA Games are held every 2 years. Countries in the South East Asian region are:
    Brunei
    Cambodia
    Indonesia
    Laos
    Malaysia
    Myanmar
    Phillippines
    Singapore
    Thailand
Timor Leste (or East Timor, recently independent from Indonesia)
    Vietnam

Of course, badminton is one of the events.

    Good draws for our shuttlers

    BY RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: National men’s number one Lee Chong Wei and the top women shuttlers were smiling on learning of the Manila SEA Games draws, which were released yesterday.

The 23-year-old Chong Wei, women’s singles shuttler Wong Mew Choo and the women’s pair of Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty have good chances to reach the individual final scheduled for Dec 3.

World number three Chong Wei, who will be playing in the Games individual competition for the first time, is the top seed and he is not in the same half of the draw as defending champion Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia.

Chong Wei has a first-round bye and he opens his campaign against the winner of the match between Vietnamese number one Nguyen Tien Minh and Singaporean Kendrick Lee Yen Hui.

The 21-year-old Tien Minh won the Malaysian satellite tournament last year and he has been regularly keeping the top players on their toes in international championships. But Chong Wei beat the Vietnamese in the third round of the Asian Championships (ABC) last year.

If Chong Wei gets past the quarter-finals, he will play against either joint third-fourth seed Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand or Simon Santoso of Indonesia.

Chong Wei said yesterday that the absence of Olympic and world champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia from the individual competition had given all the other players an even chance to win the men’s singles gold. Taufik will only compete in the team event.

“Based on the draw, I should not face any difficulty reaching the semi-finals. I have not played against either Boonsak or Simon but I will be out to live up to my billing,” said Chong Wei, the winner of the Malaysian and Danish Open titles this year.

Malaysia’s Mohd Hafiz Hashim is the second seed and barring upsets, he should play against either joint third-fourth seed Sony or Ronald Susilo of Singapore for a place in the final.

Hafiz, who resumed full training on Monday after recovering from a knee injury, has a 2-1 record against Sony. He was beaten by Sony in their last encounter at the ABC last year.

World number seven Pei Tty-Eei Hui will be out to become the first Malaysians to win the SEA Games women’s doubles gold medal.

They have been seeded second and drawn in different halves as the Indonesian top pair of Jo Novita-Greysia Polii. Pei Tty-Eei Hui are tipped to play against China-born Singaporeans Jiang Yanmei-Li Yujia in the semi-finals.

“We lost to the Indonesians (Jo-Greysia) in the Singapore Open this year. We have not played against Jiang-Li Yujia. It will not be easy to play the Singaporeans but this draw is better for us,” said Eei Hui.

“Pei Tty has recovered from her hamstring injury and is now back in training. We lost in the semi-finals at the Vietnam Games and this time, we hope to go all the way to the final and try to win the gold.”

The top seeded women’s pair are Thailand’s T. Saralee-C. Sathinee, who were losers against Pei Tty-Eei Hui in the Indonesian Open semi-finals in September.

Defending women’s singles champion Mew Choo is seeded joint third-fourth and she is expected to play against second seed Li Li of Singapore in the semi-finals. In the Indonesian Open, Mew Choo defeated the China-born player.

Thailand’s Salakjit Ponsana is the women’s singles top seed.

In the men’s doubles, mixed doubles and men’s team events, Malaysia will be strongly challenged by Indonesia.
