Now that the IBF is hot on the topic of Badminton Fashion, I thought I should review some of the attires/outfits worn by some players during this year's Aviva Singapore Open. In general, I think there has been some improvement all round. The West must be congratulated for setting the pace as can be seen in especially their women's outfits. The shirt collars are no long standardized as they are now in different shapes and designs - round, even collarless, 'v' shaped, Mao's collar, etc. And some shirts came without sleeves. The ladies, even the Asians, can be seen wearing skirts and one-piece suit. The shorts are even shorter and figure-hugging. And some players resort to head bands and other head gear to give them that extra-special look. It would be nice to see more companies come up with more choices of designs, fabrics and colours.
I wonder why the Japanese team (Hirose and MD team in the last picture) do not make use of top-of-the-line footwear. Are they simply choosing the lightest shoes?
Yes, Cheongsa is correct. Li Yujia not only plays doubles with Jiang Yanmei but even excels in mixed doubles with Saputra, as shown in the 9th pic. As some Singaporean posters have commented, Li Yujia is perhaps the prettiest Singapore lady player at present and she looks even better in person. One fashion note at the Aviva Open on Bob Milroy of Canada - I wonder whether he always plays in long sleeves and why? Some other pics from my album.
It must be hot to wear long sleeve shirts like that ? !! Besides, it looks kinda crappy compared to many others.
There was some discussion about whether doubles players should wear the same outfit. I would say that's the norm, but you have exceptions here and there:
this is the way badminton clothing should go. for sure!!! good improvement. the ladies look more attractive now
Canada is the coldest place in the world, and we always wearing long sleeve when playing badminton. j/k
They need to can the collared shirts. I likes some of the t-shirts styles Jonassnen was wearing there for a while. If they are going to market this sport to the masses, you gotta allow the players to be flashy and show some character. To me half stuff is kinda kinda blah. Look at the oufits in tennis. ( well forget Wimbeldon) Dunno about Bobby - he's always tended to wear long sleeves .
no, not really. he wore a short sleeves t shirt at the hk open. http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27913&page=3&pp=18
sometimes the players are sponsored by different companies...such as blair and munt, and laybourne and juhl so they are in effect forced to wear different stuffs
I find Gail Emms' outfits very attractive mostly because it's form fitting. The new styles for both men and women are an improvement. For the men, i find that their shirts are starting to mimic the styles that Nike has had for a while with their dri-fit and sphere branded shirts (been wearing dri fit for about 5 years). I believe the outfits for women are becoming similar in style to tennis (but not as much skin of course), but i don't know when and if we'll ever see styles that are similar to what was brought by the williams' sisters ( please no!! too tacky)
