Ahh... I'm finally back home at Badminton Central . It's been months now since I have posted!

My question is that are soft shouts before a smash legal? Yes, I've read that making loud noises are illegal in a tournament. It's only as loud as the sound of a smash on the sweet spot. Is this allowed? I know it's quite useless for technique, but it's fun. :D

Based on watching video of the tourneys, I would have to say "yes" because all the top players are yelling when the smash, especially in Men's Doubles.

Did a search and found this about shouting:

3.8.2 A player shouting to a partner who is about to hit the shuttle should not necessarily be regarded as distracting his opponent. Calling "no shot", "fault", etc. should be considered a distraction.

    15. FAULTS
15.7 If, in play, a player deliberately distracts an opponent by any action such as shouting or making gestures.

So, I guess as long as you are not "distracting" your opponent, it's OK. :D

so if you yell/shout to your partner like "yours", "smash", "mine", "out" its legal but if you do it TO your opponent then its illegal like "miss it", "out", "fault" or any sound to distract? or if you grunt or let out a sound sound to release energy its legal like "ahh", "huuh", "waah-pack":D, if you let out words its illegal? please clarify, tnx:)

Oh, that's a relief. :) I didn't know the pros do that too. Isn't it a waste of extra energy? Is it a bad habit for me to do that?

You see that in martial arts a lot... People shout a lot, but for different reasons. In karate, for example, it's to put more energy into the strike. In JKD, it's to unite the internal and external energies during a strike. The difference is that they don't tense up.

I've also seen people play badminton in the boxing of muay thai way, i.e. breathing out during a movement or a strike. It helps keep the muscles relaxed and the movements fluid.
