I'm facing a dilemma in single play. The situation is like this: I'm standing in the right corner and receive a high, deep shuttle (lob or clear). I respond with a straight clear, opponent responds with a cross court drop to my left corner. Now the dilemma comes. I can take the shuttle the moment it crosses the net, resulting in a very tight, tumbling net shot, but this brings my slightly out of balance. It's quite often a direct kill though, but when it's not, I often lose the point in the next couple of strokes. The other option is to take the shuttle when it's a bit lower, resulting in a net shot that's not as good (still decent) but staying perfect in balance. Any thoughts appreciated :)

Generally speaking, it's always better to take the shuttle early...

...but in this case it depends on what the opponent does with your early shot and later shot... :D

why are you going off balance? if you can get there early enough to tumble it nice and tight over the net, it shouldn't be a problem because your opponent will have to either:

a: drop it back, and you can kill it
b: do a defensive clear which will give you time to recover

If you tumble the shot your opponent should have to lift which you should be able to put away.

No need to compromise 1 for the other........ Get the best of both worlds! Improve!

Strengthen your footwork / balance by working on the strength of both your calf and thigh muscles. When this is done....... your oppoent is toast!

I'll say like jug8man, like training is for something and to improve your footwork for that kind of situations, during your training just do some stepways sprint and forward/backward sprints on the court, you actually get used to the dimensions of the court and you get the proper footwork for your balance problem :)

But usually when I'm at the right corner (I'm a lefty) I do a overhead crosscourt smash... thats my only good shot :D
