At long last, we have a BC member whose son is taking part in a major youth tournament in Singapore. Kokcheng, a BF'er from Kedah, Malaysia, together with his wife, accompanied their son, Jian Hao, to his first appearance at the Cheers Youth International 2005, currently being played at the Singapore Badminton Hall. (website: http://www.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/draws.asp?id=9130) This tournament, which is open to boys and girls in the U-13, U-15 and U-17 categories, has attracted 844 entries from the youths in the region and for the first time, there is a large contingent from Sri Lanka. The strong contenders are those from Indonesia, Malaysia, Chinese Taipeh and South Korea. However, I was also very impressed with Thai boy singles, Saensomboonsuk Tanongsak, seeded six in the U-17. Jian Hao is 14 and is competing in both singles and doubles in the U-15 group. He has a strong partner in Iskander Zulkarnain Zainuddin and they are seeded second. In last night's doubles encounter against Singapore's Montford schoolboys, Chandra Chen & Matthaeus Ho, Jian Hao and Iskander prevailed easily with a score of 15-5, 15-0. Naturally kokcheng is very excited about Jian Hao's recent performance on the badminton court. When JH was six, kokcheng immersed his son to his favourite game of badminton and took pains to get arguably the best coach in Kedah to train him when he was of age. With his basic foundation formed at an early age, JH found himself achieving success along the way and this inspired him to play better and to be more serious in his training. Only a month ago, JH was admitted to the prestigious Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) and this is indeed a privileged opportunity. I was told that a BJSS trainee gets free board and lodging plus badminton training and is given a monthly allowance. And he is taught the normal 6 to 8 subjects in preparation for the common major exam. To assist sports school athletes in their studies, they are given an additional year of preparation. We hope Jian Hao will enjoy both his training and his studies and one day be good enough to represent Malaysia. With the very strong support from both mum and dad, that is an unbeatable incentive!
