FedEx sponsors China's badminton team from 2006 to 2008.
    http://www.chinabadminton.com/zhishi/2005122192817.asp, (Chinese article)

It says it is switching logo to FedEx logo on all players' shirts. It also says FedEx will give the best financial support to the sport than any other sponsor in the past.

Does it mean they drop Yonex?

I think it means that the team will still be using/wearing Yonex stuff but will have an additional logo on the front (most like what the Denmark team wears).

Probably.. But I have to say it would be very interesting if the equipment sponsor was individual to each player... Maybe we would then see some Chinese manufacturer moving forward in the national team.. Now manufacturers like SOTX, Kason, Tactic are effectively shut-out of getting their stuff used by the very best players (national-team members).. Which I would guess hurts the Chinese brands marketing wise :)

this is a fantastic development. It's the first time a sponsor outside of china and outside the realm of badminton(ie USA) is sponsoring what fedex thinks is a rising phenomenon.

but hopefully with more american exposure, export sales of kason, sotx, etc will follow. For most developing countries, the buying habit tends to imitate what american buys. If badminton popularity improve in US/canada, i'm sure it will boost sales for all badminton equip. makers

Thats good to hear. They will do anything to penetrate the Chinese Market. FedEx already setuped asian region office in Shanghai. Previously was in Philippines.

Maybe the Chinese players can finally stop wearing those horrible sponsor's banners on the front of their shirts, you know the ones stuck on with safety pins, they looked uncomfortable and likely to fall off, like a marathon runner's number. :p

FedEx will probably want their logo stitched on by Yonex at the shirt factory, like the tennis players.

But it's definitely a good development for badminton overall.

Who knows, if FedEx does well out of the deal, other US companies may take notice and follow.

So everyone who's buying/sending stuff to China, you know who to use now.

Yeah if it is structured that way. Unfortunately the various Badminton Associations are not (e.g. Malaysia used to have Gosen as their National Team sponsor.

Whilst it is good news, it makes no odds to yonex' sponsorship deal, since their deal is only to supply the clothing and equipment to the national team. All it does is replace china telecom as the logo on the front of Team China's shirts.

A clever move perhaps for Fedex, since I believe China is hosting a small sporting occasion in 2008 which will conincide with the ending on the deal?!

Cynical or not, it is encouraging that a major corporation is seeing the market link between the popularity of the games and the popularity of badminton, and maybe this could boost badmintons appeal?

I think it is a matter of time before new sponsors discover that there is a gold mine in the new scoring system. One minute when the score is 11 and two minutes between sets will bring in more sponsors than those silly sponsors' names/logos on players shirts and racquets.

Me neither, but in swiss open the yonex shirts still had Fedex on.

The LN shirts so far have been training shirts and they don't usually have the shirt sponsor on.

i think those fedex logos were on yonex shirts.
I think LN has to get the shirts and names printed before giving them to players. Maybe LN just isn't too concern about it during this transitional period.
