Lee Dong Soo, Choi Ji Tea, Lim Bang An, are coming to Calgary next week to help prepare and coach for the 2007 Canada Games! I just got an email today! I'll let everyone know what playing against them is like (for a Canadian :D). Also btw are all Korean names 3 syllables?

I was able to rally with them last April at the Calgary Winter Club during some training sessions that the CWC pro's setup for master players. Unforuntely the language barrier made it difficult to do much beyond just showing some technics while Kathreen Yoo (another club professional from korea) translated from Korean to English.

It certainly was a thrill though to play them a bit over the course of about 4 days and on the last day before they left I got they're autographs on the 2004 Olympics CD's I have. They also put on a great show for the exhibition too which is on another thread http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22501&highlight=korean+exhibition

Choi Ji Tea is the director of badminton for Samsung I think but I'm not totally sure on that one. He's a former Korean national player and participated with the the training sessions last year with his wife (she is former national player as well - and super deceptive)

Aside from the Canadian national players that will be at the 1 week clinic, I might have heard someone mention that one or two of them might be here for as long as a month or so after.

All of that is right. Choi was on the national team in 96-97. He seems to be 4th in command at Samsung Electronics team. (the title is "joomoo" and the only translation I can find is "person in charge"). He is below '92 gold-medalist Kim Moon-soo(coach), Han Sung-kwi(director) and Lee Sang-pyo (rep?- probably an exec at the actual company). Here they call him the assistant director.

The third guy's name is usually (ie in IBF documents) spelled Yim Bang Eun. It is actually pronounced Im Bahng-un with the last syllable sounding similar to the English prefix "un-". He is very tall and used to play doubles with Kim Yong-hyun. He partnered with Ha Tae-kwun a few times early in 2005. At 44th in the world, he is the highest ranked player there but he was in the top 10 a few years ago. See photos.
Pretty much. I'd say 90% of the time you'll see a single Chinese character for the family name and two for the given name. It isn't uncommon to find a single-character given name. Recently the odd girl gets a 3-character given name and very rarely you'll see a two-syllable family name. Given the proportion in the first two categories, it is very similar to Chinese, no?
I don't find that funny. Actually, South Korea's hero in the interwar period, Kim Ku, had a two-syllable name as did the central figure in their creation story, Dan Gun.

What are the chances that they are going to be joined by Kim Dong-moon? Badminton Canada was obviously courting him. He didn't choose Canada solely on the strength of our English education record. The program that is sending Kim to Canada is a sports diplomacy thing. If he's going to work for Badminton Canada, Calgary is a good bet for his destination. Vancouver is just where he's staying when he arrives, according to his host. Why is none of this on the Badminton Canada website?

Good question. We are still trying to figure out who is actually sponsoring KDM over. Calgary is going to be cold. Vancouver is much, much better :D (Sorry Cooler). There has been no information from either Badminton Canada nor Badminton BC/Badminton Alberta at all so it is really a mystery who KDM will be associated with when he gets here.

no prob WWC, u can't argue that calgary is cooler than vancouver :p
i think badminton canada kept a low profile on kdm because nothing is firm up yet. Because federal funding is sparse for badminton, badminton canada may not be laying claim of securing kdm.

event, i didnt mean to offend all korean people. What i meant are from North Korean perspective, not the south korean. You can't deny that Kim Jong Il has a strangle hold of his people from birth, mentally, spiritually and physically. Saddam hussein is on trial but yet Kim Jong Il is watching cartoons in his palace.

I've made my clarification. Dont want this thread closed for political discussion ;)

Kim Jong Il is a lot smarter than Saddam Hussein. He also has "Weapons of Mass Destruction"-sounds familiar?-whereas Saddam Hussein only wished he had. If Kim Jong Il has no nuclear bombs he would be history. :D

The Korean training prgram is much much different than Ardy's at the glencoe.
I'm not sure if its differences in Korean training and Indonesian training or the doubles vs singles. Ardy's workouts are more endurance and stamina based and involve leg strength. The Korean's workouts are hardly cardio at all (if your in good badminton shape) and all leg strength. They would make me take lunges from 3/4 back from the net on the court to hit net shots which they expected me to roll! These Korean's are maybe the best coaching I've ever recieved. They take interest and stop you if you are doing something incorrectly. It is difficult to communicate though b/c the translators are not always around. Through this training I almost want to start taking doubles up seriously again... won't happen tho.

as i have said before, top players may not make great coaches. They teach u what had worked for them in the past. U may not get a truly complete training. Ardy focus on stamina and endurance because he is a defensive MS player. The korea session u getting now is from MD specialists, focusing on explosiveness. Best is to learn from as many pros as possible and u will find out what feature u excel in and this will tell u where to specialize into.

I didnt say cartoon watchers are dumb. You error grossly by associating cartoons with preschoolers. Ha, on the contrary, cartoon watchers are smarter people :p Me learn english from watching Simpsons and fighting tactics from watching bugs bunny.

Here is kim J I's favorite shows:

KJI especially loves Hollywood movies. His favorites include Rambo, Friday the 13th, the James Bond series, and Hong Kong action films. His favorite stars are Elizabeth Taylor and Sean Connery.

Kim also adores children's cartoons, especially Daffy Duck. (Evidently, the Dear Leader has amassed the world's largest collection of Daffy cartoons.) And he's a giant Michael Jackson fan.

    He also loves p...y and..he would...err, i think i better stop here :p

If only saddam H. had watched cartoons, he would be alot smarter LOL

    nice try taneepak ;)

Ya I have also come to that conclusion. Great advice tho. I've been fortunate to have been coached by a couple international danish players as well as the koreans and Ardy. Unfortunately no Chinese coaches yet... I tend to play singles more the chinese style... set yourself up at the net and smash. However working with Ardy has improved my defense and footwork 100x over itself in the past 4 months... not to mention consistency and fitness..:D:D

u r taking the right route. Getting the foundation skills (consistencey, fitness, speed) early on is much more important than learning attacking skill at this stage. Because of his height and not a big jumper, it is harder to make ardy into a attacking player so he specialized in mostly defensive. Neither defensive or offensive is better, However, with the rally point system, being offensive has a slight advantage. If u got a good jumpsmash and/or height advantage, being offensive player has an edge too. However, look at gong zhichao and taiwan gal cheng shao chieh, they are very short but they got great stroke and defensive skills.

Hi Eurasian and cooler. Did this group from Samsung visit the Winter Club this winter? Yoo Yong-sung (Lee Dong-soo's longtime MD partner) is the new coach at my gym here and he said he'd been invited by the Winter Club and that he'd visited in the past (perhaps the occasion described by not4u?). He said he'd been invited to go this year, too, but that his new position here made that impossible so the other guys went without him. I was confused when he said that Ardy was elsewhere in Calgary but as I read more carefully, I see that Ardy is at the Glencoe. So do national team players play at both places or only at the Glencoe? Yoo says he hopes to live and coach in Canada someday. That may be more good news for Canada. I hope I can learn a little from him here before he goes.

I would suspect that if any of the Korean players come to Canada in a coaching position, the Calgary Winter Club would be at the top of the list for them due to past history and being actively sought after. Even if it is only a short term of 6 months to one year as I know that learning English is a big priority to be able to go back to Korea with. Besides that, it doesn't hurt that one of our club professionals is a former National Korean player fluent in English :) (Catherine Yoo - no relation)

On a side note, for those of you who don't know who she is, she is an amazing singles player and has been slaughtering everyone on the Tues competitive ladder at the CWC.

    yes, read post #9;)
the nationals train at the glencoe club. CWC is a second private club with equally or better facililites (newer) but doesnt has a big name pro trainer. (catherine is a part time consultant but she's getting more 'work' these days).
Glencoe has 2, ardy and chanorang.

    funny thing today:
while waiting for 'someone' today at the CWC lobby, i sat lazily, almost horizontally with my legs fully stretched out, and almost tripped Lee Dong Soo walking out the door. I also saw choi ji tea and Im Bahng-un and one other lady, prolly choi's wife?? I saw choi ji last year exhibition too.
