I am a fan of our Malaysian Badminton Team and I have followed their up and down for many many years. i hope that our team will be able to do well this year and i would like to invite readers to contribute their thought on our Malaysian Players whether it is tournaments,Training, Attitude and Attribute, Malaysian Badminton Rumours and Development. For years, we have been trying to produce a champion to end China Dominance but we have not been very successful. The Best we have now is Lee Chong Wei whom i admire most but he too have difficulty when faces the Chinese Team. Our Womens whom we have Wong Mew Choo who have tried her best to put our Malaysian Flags up also find it difficult to beat some of the world top ten players. What exactly do we need? Could it be the training? could it be we dont have a large pool of talents?
My impression is Malaysia badminton mens team remains steadily at world #4 standing behind China, Indonesia, and Denmark. Womens team is probably world #6 behind China, Indonesia, Denmark, Korea, and Japan. To see China and Indonesia as a wall to break apart rather than a wall to stop them, I think it needs the following: 1. A breakthough in training program or simply train as tough as Indonesia or China. 2. Increase pool of talents. 3. Improve players stamina. 4. Work on players mental strength. Malaysia players are good in 3 stars tournaments but would give points away easily when playing against opponents from China and Indonesia at major tournaments. 5. Work on each player's consistency.
I believe that the development of badminton in Malaysia is poor. Here in the UK and especially so in Denmark, the badminton club / county leagues are very competitive and very well organised. It helps develop and discover talent. I'm not sure how the system works in China and Indonesia, but I'm sure it's similar in Korea and Japan. So that's a major let down ... Another thing I suppose we have to bear in mind is that, apart from Denmark, the population in the other badminton giants are much larger than in Malaysia. Here's a rough indication: Malaysia - 24m China - 1300m South Korea - 48m Japan - 127m Indonesia - 244m Denmark - 5m Even though this is not an excuse, there is a significantly larger pool of talent to choose from in the other countries. Having said that, we have to take into account the % of the population who actually play the sport, which I don't have stats on so can only speculate.
Improvement of players n talents. Hi, Besides the population base, Government support is also vital in building up a vast pool of talented players. Imagine if u have a huge population like India, where there were not enough facilities and ample support from the State, the game could not even reach the International level. Further to this government red tapes too will limit the admission of talented players in various states or provinces. The following factors too are very important for the sport to develop talented players and bring it to the international level: (1) Government support. (2) Ample facilities (3) Well organised and structured training programmes. (4) Centralised training (5) MNC sponsored. (6) Experienced coaches. Malaysia should scout all the states and develop young talented players n it will be a matter of time before they will world beaters. Matrix
I have watched our under 16 Boys playing against China in the Final and Indonesia in the Semi Final in the Asian U16 boys Asian Championship. I found that we have the ability to beat some of the world class players at the junior level. Malaysia has the ability to reach top for the boys standard at the junior level but what about the senior level. We beat China in the U16 boys team event. Even in the world junior championship we have Tan Boon Heong/Hoon Thean How last year who won the title? after graduate from the Junior, we have yet to see any progress unlike China.If I remember well, Yeoh Kay Bin, Jeremy Gan and Gan Teik Chye are some of those who did quite well at the Junior level but somehow falls out or unable to breakthrough at the senior level. The junior girls have no results. Perhaps there is no concentration on them or it is just Malaysia do not have talented girls.Poorer countries like Indonesia, Thailand and India have a good pool of talented juniors.Our current top junior Julia Wong recently lost to Wang Lin 11/0 and 11/1 who is almost the same age as her shown on our standard. I feel that the transition from the junior to senior level is the source of our failure.Malaysia should addressed why we failed where other countries like China, Indonesia, Korea are able to lift their top junior players to the top at the senior level. Perhaps more qualified coaches are needed? Concentration and focus on smaller pool of talent. Development coaches must be more qualified as skilled development is important. Sent the Juniors for more tournament for exposure. Malaysia should specialised their players at the junior level. For eg Japan, Korea and China, they identified suitability of each player to be specialised into Single,doubles or Mixed. there is no waste of time and resources.
I notice the same problem too. We are good in junior levels but when those juniors mark their career as seniors, they can't improve as fast as the players from China. At the end,we are still lagging behind.
in all england now we only have Lee Chong Wei in the Mens Single.Our best Ladies lost too.Chong Wei is crafty and have good skills-probably that is why he is still on course. Wong Mew Choo tried her best but it is tough for her. We have yet to see some good junior who can come up unlike China who have Chen Jin who are able to come up within 3 years. Lu Lan. Zhu Lin are some of the future Women star in the future for China. In Malaysia I am not sure whether we really have any upcoming juniors though we have Woon Thien How and Tan Boon Heong in the mens double. Anyway it is not easy to produce a Champion. I hope Lee Chong Wei will be able to move on to put our Malaysian Flag up in All England.
Pick your top 5 Please give your suggestions for top 5 Malaysian players to feature on TV? I'm going to shoot interviews, training etc to profile top players in Malaysia and Indonesia. LCW of course. i think wong choon hann would be at the top right beside LCW becoz he is the "captain" sorta of the team and one of the most experienced in the team...and chin ee hui and wong pei thy coz they did well last year and currently world no4 the highest for a malaysian for a long while and one more anything preferably players who did well or older ones mayb the head coach?yap kim hock?
lagging I think lee choong wei, sony dwi kuncoro, lin dan & bao chun lai come from the same junior tournament. while lin dan & bao Cl making names at the age aroung 18-19 sony around 20-21 and LCW only coming out aroung 22-23 this really show that malaysia are really slow in developing their junior world class player into senior world class player..

hey I've been a fan since i was little!i remember watching Malaysia won Thomas Cup in 1992. i was 7!i don't think i understand anything back then, just went on cheering for the Team LIKE MAD with my daddy lol As for answering 'what do we need'..i'm no professional but i think the players need a new environment. like nicol David.she trains in England or somewhere like it, kan? well, may be we can try a new environment.but it will be costly for sure..
