I may be visiting the area this upcoming May-July. Are there clubs or centers around that can offer me high quality badminton training? Also, if you can recommend any decent places to stay? Thanks - anthony
There are 2 places you can get training: 1. www.nycbadminton.com Group training: 12-1:30 on sunday? Private training: need to pre-schedule 2. www.friendlybadminton.com Group training: Sat 9:30-10:30 / 10:30-11:30 (Jamaica HS), Sun ??? (Hoboken, NJ) Private training: Sat / Sun: need to pre-schedule I suggest you to contact each club for more detailed information.
Also, both clubs have highly skilled coaching staff. The leading coaches were both ex-international lvl players.
Advice For a first-timer, what would you suggest me to bring? Just racquets & shuttles (feather or synthetic?) and a change of clothes? I'm hoping to check some of the NYC clubs out in the upcoming weeks and I have not played for over a decade
You should bring change clothes and racket, at least. NYCB provides feather shuttles, which being covered in ur fee. For other NY clubs, they don't provide shuttles. Everyone contributes shuttles (98% feather) to the game. If you don't have feather shuttles, most club managers do the selling on the spot as well. Enjoy the games.
good am! i'll be in NYC on the 1st week of march till the 14th. can i play w/ you guys during my short stay there? do they rent out rackets there? sorry can't bring my badminton equipment w/ me.
Sure deal. I am more than willing to play w/ our fellow BFers. Just make sure don't trash me 15:0 in every game. In NYCB, they do rent rackets ($2 per session?). In other clubs, there's no such services, but the managers sometimes do bring 1 or 2 extra old rackets, just to lend to ppl who need it.
thanks lazybuddy! i'd be glad to meet of of badminton central's distinguished posters! i'll be staying in my aunt's place at 91st and 2nd ave. so the best venue for me is at wagner high. pls PM me your contact number. i'll get in touch w/ you when i'm in NYC. thanks man! btw, i'm an intermediate player only.
Man, the intermediate lvl from Asia is usually quite "advanced" to us. Yeah, seems ur place is close to Wagner HS, which meets on Wed, I believe. However, I don't attend wed sessions, due to my own schedule. Personally, I usually attend Fri / Sun sessions @ HS of art and design (2nd ave and 56st). If you want, you can find me there easily, at least for sunday sessions.
i definitely could not make it on a sunday. my aunts will bring us out state on weekends. i might try to join on a fri. see you soon man!
Sunday will be the best time for me. However, I will try my best to make more trips on fri, if I am not forced to stay in OT.
lazybuddy, sorry i wasn't able to drop by during my stay in nyc. my 1.5weeks stay there was sooo brief and hectic. we drove to pennsylvania and long island (hampton) during the weekends. and i also met w/ some of my childhood friends already living in nyc, nj after work during weekdays. not to mention a one day seminar at the javits center.

guest fee / annual or monthly fees will be visiting in early july, from san francisco. what are the monthly [or yearly] membership fees to join nycb? how about a one day guest fee for visitors?
I don't think NYCB offers monthly membership. Queens Badminton (a new branch of NYCB) might. Check www.queensbadminton.com for detail. The yearly membership for NYCB is $200 (last year's rate), and you need to pay $14-15 per visit on top of that. They do offer 3 months and 6 months membership as well, but i can't remember the $ amount. The walk in price is $25, I believe. All the fees might be updated arleady, as the last time I renewed my membership was in Jan time frame. So, give them a call for detail summer schedule / location / fee is the way to go.
