Lets discuss it!!! First, I do mid court smashes more often , cause it generates power the most... It gives the opponent no chance
i normally use 75% power shot straigh down the line and occasionally a 100% shot straight at the body. Also depending on the opponent I will hit half quick stick smashes sharply angled to set myself up for the midcourt lift.
Smashes to back hand!!! I found out that smashes to opponents left side is very dangerous. For example, I did it at a match and my opponent drops the shuttlecock right to the net...
It depends on the situation... For doubles, if you are fed a high clear to the back court and your partner is right handed, it is prefered for you to smash center to center-right. This way your partner can do intercepts easier IF the smash is blocked or cleared poorly. In a typical doubles match, smashes down the center is about 75-90%. This also adds the aspect of "confusion" (who's blocking the center smash? Usually the person diagonal to the smasher.), If the smash is returned as another high clear, move the smash about a foot or two to the left or right of the previous smash so it changes the footwork and angle of the defender. Or smash to the sides. For singles, typically cross court or straight (line) smashes are prefered. Like I wrote in the title, it ALL depends. Give a situation and you'll get better answers that are more direct. Good luck!
In singles - I tend to go down the line, then throw in the odd left-to-right cross court smash when they start guarding the line. In doubles, I tend to hit my smashes straight for the body first. If they Manage to get the shuttle back, I'll go down the line. My deadliest smash is straight down the right side. Over the tourney this last weekend, they were damn near untouchable.
I play doubles so I usually smash the middle, hard and high (MHH). It does a few things: 1) Creates confusion between the two opponents, who returns it? 2) High makes it very hard to return deep, hard to lift. If there's a return, it's usually a weak block and my partner finishes it off. However, there's a problem with the MHH shot, if I don't get enough angle, it'll go out by about 2'-3'.
"However, there's a problem with the MHH shot, if I don't get enough angle, it'll go out by about 2'-3'. " Hehehe.. mine too.
i tend to use different smashes for singles and doubles, in singles i will aim my smash down the sides and try for more angle(slightly less power). in doubles i will uwse continuous smashes to wear out my oppenent and set my partner up for a winner... or set myself up, because i do this this i use 100% full power on most smashes in doubles
Generally i try and attack the open area with a slice smash because it seems to make the return wayward and alot more difficult to gain the innitative. But you can never beat the feeling of just ripping one hard and down the middle Ally!
Yea for singles, I smash right down the line either to the left or right. They can't reach it. Especially short people. For doubles, i smash down the middle to cause confusion or sometimes I smash at the weaker player.
For singles although the smash is the 'ultimate' shot I rarely use it, instead moving the oppponent around the court with attacking clears and drops and only smashing when its certain to be a winner/or to set me up for a winner.
when you watch high standard juniors play they very rarely use smashes in singles because they are not as effective as an adults smash which obviously is more powerful
would say that there is at least one smash per rally normally in pro's singles(most likely the winner)
most of my smashe sin singles are line-shots...if I'm faste rthan my oppoenent (court-speed) then I tend to cross-smash more..especially against teh shorter ones, with less reach. an intercepting-jump is very suited for those aimed-smashes. thoguh my smash isn't hard..and smashing it high and 3' out is definatly out fo t5eh question for me...If I smash and wack it with 100% power, in such an angle, people wil say I'm clearing ... In doubles I tend to jump more and am geneally in a more relaxed position to smash...(no split-jumping. no block jumping, etc...)and can therefor jump straight up. and get more power and all...still not a powerhouse, but I can live with that...
a smash to a bad high-serve is also a good shot to take initiative in a rally.... when I start a rally with a clear, and keep clearing dropping...there's not really an attack and defense..When is weave in a smash I can take teh initiative easier..and contorl the rally... though a weak smash, from a bad position, and on the opponents "strong defence side"(a backhand-defender backhand ) Your in trouble....
