please see the link at the bottom of this post for a video interview with the reigning MD World Champions Howard Bach and Tony Gunawan.

Howard and Tony came up to the Bay Area last Saturday for an exhibition match, I sat down with them at the end of the exhibition and talked with them for 15mins on various questions. i asked them various questions about their past, their equipment choice, their WC experience, as well as their future plans as a pair and their thoughts on the new scoring system.

it was very enjoyable talking to Tony and Howard. after talking to them, i find them friendly and approachable. Tony was smiling all the time and Howard likes to make jokes. :) i was a bit nervous at the beginning, but i think the whole interview came out very well.

they both gave their frank opinion of the scoring system, which i think we should keep in mind when we discuss the issue with the scoring system.

the topics i went through was:

    - Tony's reason for retirement in 2001
    - how Tony's presense influenced Howard's game
    - how was Tony's adjustment to the USA
    - Howard and Tony's racket choice
    - Howard's thoughts on playing with 3 badminton legends
    - Howard's WC experience
    - Tony's thoughts on playing against former teammates
    - Tony's advancement in skills after coming to the US
    - Howard/Tony's future plans
    - Howard/Tony's thoughts on the scoring systems.

here is the link to the video. you need a DivX codec to view it. the sound isn't very good as it was a noisy environment, you may need to turn up the volume.

i want to thanks Andy Gouw of ASBY Sports ( www.asby.com ) who allowed me the opportunity to talk with Howard / Tony in private. and of course, thanks Howard and Tony for their time...

    enjoy!

What the heck is the background noise? Ice Hockey? Slapping noises :D

That was really great, Kwun ... it's awesome to actually see legend(s) converse and give their thoughts.

I like Tony's comment that the 21-pt system ruins the beauty of badminton, and if you're behind in points, it makes it even harder to stage a comeback.

Wonder how the victims of the AE2006 comebacks feel about this? :D

yeah. i agree. and i can attest that none of the questions are rehearsed. in fact, i spent almost the whole evening the day before trying to come up with a good set of questions that i can fit into 15mins. and i only wrote them down during the event... :p

yes, Tony was very frank and outright says the rally scoring system "ruins" badminton. Howard's reaction isn't very positive towards it either, but he did also pointed out the positive side of it.

other interesting discoveries. Tony said his choice before the Olympics was the cab22. but after switching to MP100, he find that is the best racket despite trying other ones. Howard likes the NS8000. tension for both are in the 30lbs range.

Howard/Tony will continue to play together, the next open they play will be the Philippines.

also, before the interview, they mentioned to me that they read the WC article i wrote about the WC MD final. what an honor!

    awesome downloading speed!!!

i had a 5 second peak at the beginning, something that i dont see in servers from even big companies.

it is a bit difficult to hear the interview because of the loud background noise :(:crying:

Excellent effort, Kwun! The hall is too loud to hear the conversation in full clarity. Maybe a written version of what was said will be helpful. So, Howard and Tony do surf BF :).

not sure because of codecs or not, but usually codecs problem is for picture not sound. i used media player as well but it's fine.

Everyone download VLC from the VLC website. Most versatile video program I've ever seen. It works with everything... actually. I've never run into something that VLC can't play with sound and picture.

Just google VLC and goto the website. Free download.

The audio codec is WAVE_FORMAT_AC3 and Nero Digital Audio Decoder should be able to handle it.

Thanks kwun for the good work. I just downloaded the AVI, the video quality is great and topics are interesting. However, did you forget to use a shotgun microphone or my speakers are bad....I can barely hear the sound of the clips. In any case, I still enjoy watching it <img>, thanks again for sharing !
